भारत के सर्वोच्च न्यायालय ने सभी राज्यों और केंद्र शासित प्रदेशों को निर्देश दिया है कि वे गैर-वनीय उद्देश्यों के लिए अवैध रूप से आवंटित वन भूमि की जाँच करें और उन्हें पुनः प्राप्त करें, इसे गंभीर कानूनी और पारिस्थितिकीय उल्लंघन बताते हुए।

यह निर्देश उस समय आया जब पुणे (महाराष्ट्र) के कोंढवा बुड़रुक में 11.89 हेक्टेयर आरक्षित वन भूमि के आवंटन को अवैध घोषित किया गया।  

यह भूमि 1998 में कृषि उद्देश्यों के लिए आवंटित की गई थी और 1999 में एक निजी बिल्डर को बेच दी गई।
