- Recently ,it has been observed that the Snow leopard has never been spotted nor recorded in the Namdapha National Park and Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district.Â
About Snow Leopard
- Scientific Name : Panthera uncia
- The snow leopard has a beautiful, spotted coat, thick enough to insulate them from the cold.Â
- Snow leopards are solitary creatures, and skillful predators, able to kill prey up to three times their own weight in challenging terrain
- Distribution :They are sparsely distributed across 12 countries in central Asia, from southern Russia down to the Tibetan plateau, including Mongolia, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal.
- Threats:Â the loss of natural prey species, retaliatory killing due to conflict with humans and illegal trade of its fur and bones.
- Conservation : Classified as ‘Vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red list and listed in Schedule-I species of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
