दहेज निषेध अधिनियम, 1961 के अनुसार, ‘कोई भी संपत्ति या मूल्यवान सुरक्षा जो विवाह में किसी पक्ष को, दूसरे पक्ष, उसके माता-पिता या किसी अन्य व्यक्ति को प्रत्यक्ष या अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से दी जाती है या देने का वादा किया जाता है, उसे दहेज कहा जाता है।’ 

दहेज से जुड़ी हिंसा और मृत्यु गहरे आधार के साथ पितृसत्तात्मक सोच की निशानी हैं और भारत में लिंग आधारित अपराधों के सबसे स्थायी रूपों में से एक हैं।
