  • India is expanding its pumped storage hydropower capacity to support renewable energy integration, grid stability, and energy security.

  • Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) are large-scale energy storage systems that use water and gravity to store electricity. They are often described as “water batteries.”
  • A typical PSP consists of two reservoirs at different elevations. During periods of surplus electricity, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir. When demand rises, the stored water is released through turbines to generate electricity.

  • Three Indian sites have been added to UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, taking India’s Tentative List to 81 sites.

  • The three sites are the Karst-mud-volcano Complex of Baratang and Andaman Subduction Volcanoes in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the Sirpur Cultural and Archaeological Landscape in Chhattisgarh.
  • Inclusion on the tentative list is a prerequisite for any property to be considered for nomination to the World Heritage List.
