World Population Day (11 July) Theme & History

World Population Day was established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989. The Day is observed on 11 July every year focusing on spreading awareness regarding Gender issues, Maternal Health, Poverty & Human Rights. The day was encouraged by the 'Five Billion Day' which was previously observed on July 11, 1987. It was the day when the world population reached 5 billion people in number.

World Population Day is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, like SDG 3 for Good Health and Well-being, SDG 5 for Gender Equality. Countries like Japan & Italy are facing the 'Silver Tsunami' or population ageing. This means their recognisable population has entered the 65+ years, also called the baby boomers.

Day of Five Billion (1987)

• On 11 July 1987, the global population came closer to the 5 billion mark. It was a landmark moment in world demography and attracted worldwide attention to the rapid population growth.
• This day focused the world on sustainable development, resource management, and the pace of population expansion.

Establishment of World Population Day by UNDP (1989)

• The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) focused on population related issues. This was necessary after the 'Day of Five Billion' gained momentum.
• In the year 1989, the UNDP Governing Council observed the World Population Day every year on July 11.
• The main purpose was to promote awareness of population issues and strengthen policy integration.

United Nations General Assembly Resolution (1990)

• The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution 45/216 in December 1990 and formally established the annual observance of World Population Day.
• This resolution demonstrated World Population Day as an important mechanism for raising awareness and promoting action.

• The United Nations has announced the theme for World Population Day 2026 is "Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people-today and for the future."
• The theme emphasises the importance of investing in education, health, skills, and rights of youth for them to influence the future through demographic means.
• It ensures the involvement of the youth in decision-making processes, exploiting the demographic dividend, and creating inclusive societies for the future generation.

World Population Day was 1st observed on 11th July 1990 with the involvement of more than 90 nations. It was created after "Day of Five Billion" that had been observed on 11th July 1987. This marked that at that time the world population reached approx 5 billion. World Population Day was formally recognized by the UN General Assembly through Resolution 45/216 in December 1990. After that the day has focused on issues such as reproductive health, family planning, gender equality, poverty, and sustainable development that relate to population. Population milestones like world population crossing six billion in 1999 and seven billion in 2011 were other important events.

World Population Day, celebrated every year on 11th July. This is to raise awareness about the various issues related to world populations and its effects on society, economy and environment. Its main goal is to make the masses aware of the various problems like population growth, poverty, inequality, maternal health, education and healthcare. It stresses on reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and family planning. World Population Day stresses on the need for developing policies for sustainable development for improving the quality of life. It stresses on the empowerment of women and youth while making sure that the population policies do not infringe upon any human rights.
