The Kargil War took place in 1999 between India and Pakistan, from May to July in the mountainous terrain of Kargil, Ladakh. Despite signing the Lahore Declaration in February 1999 to bring peace in the region, the forces of Pakistan infiltrated the heights of the LoC in order to threaten the strategically important Srinagar-Leh Highway. The infiltration was detected by India in May and India responded by conducting Operation Vijay.
The war was highly difficult since the soldiers of India had to mount the mountains and fight in freezing conditions while having to overcome the enemies that were located at a much higher altitude than them. The Indian Air Force conducted Operation Safed Sagar to support the army operations while artillery bombardments weakened the defense system of the enemies. The Indian army had many victories at Tololing and Tiger Hill, where the Indians regained Tiger Hill on 4 July 1999.
Indian soldiers showed exemplary courage during this war and Captain Vikram Batra, Lieutenant Manoj Kumar Pandey, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav and Rifleman Sanjay Kumar got the Param Vir Chakra, the highest gallantry award of India.
