The Indian Army solemnly remembers the brave soldiers who gave away their lives, thus launching a memorial outreach all over the country to honor the spirit of sacrifice and engage the citizens with the stories of valor which make this day historic.

Historical Context

The Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed to commemorate the fierce armed conflict between India and Pakistan in the summer of 1999, known as the Kargil War. The conflict was staged in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir after infiltrators from Pakistan-continued territory took important positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC).

Background	The Kargil War finds its genesis in the long-standing dispute of Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Despite earlier wars and ongoing negotiations, the tension boiled over when Pakistani forces and militants crossed the LoC in early 1999 to occupy strategic heights.
The War and The Response	The Indian Army launched Operation Vijay against the incursion. The battle was fought at very high altitudes under treacherous conditions as Indian soldiers recaptured from July 1999 most of the positions that had been occupied.
Results	India achieved a resounding military victory wherein the intruders had to retreat.
