National Cadet Corps (NCC)

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the world's largest uniformed youth organization working under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. It was established in 1948 and is headquartered in New Delhi. It is a tri-service youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces. The motto of NCC is 'एकता और अनुशासन'.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) spreads awareness about the armed forces services, opens career opportunities as NCC 'C' certificate holders are called for direct SSB interview, encourages young people to serve the nation, and induces physical and mental toughness.

It works towards the development of self-discipline, leadership qualities and service spirit in the students of schools, colleges and Universities all over India. It imparts military skills and social service training for producing responsible and physically fit citizens of India. Enrolling in the NCC is completely voluntary and bears no liability towards active military services.

• The origin of the NCC can be traced to the University Corps established during the colonial times, and then the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC).
• The primary function of these institutions was to get university students involved in military training so that trained youths would be encouraged for the armed forces.
• After independence, the need arose for a nation-wide organisation of young people consisting of discipline, unity, and readiness among youth of India.
• This led to the enactment of the National Cadet Corps Act in 1948 through which NCC formally came into existence as a unified organisation for school and college students across India.
• With time, NCC expanded its coverage and established units in schools and colleges in almost all states and union territories of India.
• NCC developed separate wings for boys and girls and also widened its mandate from purely military‑oriented training to include adventure sports, social service, environmental campaigns and disaster‑management activities.
• In recent years, the National Cadet Corps has been further strengthened and expanded its presence in border and coastal areas.
• It has also integrated with new‑age domains such as cyber awareness and evolved its role in a changing security and societal context.

• The National Cadet Corps influences the personality traits and mindset of the young cadets through inculcating traits such as discipline, sense of responsibility, secularism, among others.
• The cadets are taught skills such as team work, time management, and decision-making through the holding of parades and camps, which ultimately helps them in being productive citizens.
• Their experience in the tri-services environment enables the cadets to develop knowledge about issues related to national security and contributions of the armed forces.
• Besides the development of personality, there is a direct involvement of NCC in various socio-developmental tasks as well.
• The cadets organize cleanliness drives, environment protection drives, blood donation camps, literacy drives, health awareness campaigns, thereby helping the government's initiatives in various aspects, such as the 'Swachh Bharat' campaign and the 'Jal Shakti' programme and many others.
• During any natural disaster such as floods and cyclones, NCC takes part in the relief operation, crowd management. Moreover, the national integration is promoted by NCC through organizing all India camps and Republic Day contingents, comprising cadets from across the nation.
• Thus, as an organization, NCC plays a crucial role in developing responsible citizens and disciplined youth in India.
