  • The National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) is observed every year on 24 April to mark the establishment of the Panchayati Raj system.

    Athletics Watchdog Flags ‘extremely high’ Doping Risk in India

  • The Athletics Integrity Unit Board has downgraded the Athletics Federation of India over “extremely high” doping risks among athletes, potentially affecting India’s 2036 Olympics hosting bid.

  • The downgrade means India’s track and field athletes will now have to comply with more stringent anti-doping stipulations.
  • Also all national team members have to undergo tests before major championships.

    India Welcomes Japan Easing Defence Export Curbs

  • As Japan relaxed restrictions on its arms exports, India welcomed the move and said that both sides have committed to “increase practical cooperation in the interest of their national security”.

  • Japan relaxed decades-old restrictions on its arms exports, and this is seen as a major departure from the pacifism that has characterised its post-World War II defence policy. 
  • Earlier restrictions limit arms exports to just five categories – rescue, transport, warning, surveillance and minesweeping.
  • This means Japan can now sell lethal weapons to the 17 countries with which it has defence agreements, including the US and the UK.
