    • Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed in West Bengal’s Howrah district after violence erupted during Ram Navami celebrations.
    • Similar clashes erupted in Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

    Section 144

    • Section 144 of the Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973 empowers a district magistrate to issue orders to address urgent cases of apprehended danger.
    • It prohibits Assembly of four or more people. However, it can also be used to restrict a single individual.
    • Orders passed under it remain in force for two months. The duration can be  extended but the total period cannot be more than six months.

    Ram Navami

    • Ram Navami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ram.
    • This festival is a part of the Chaitra Navaratri and falls on the ninth day of the  Shukla Paksha of the lunar cycle of Chaitra month in Hindu calendar.
