Biosphere reserves are found on every continent. except Antarctica.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mata Atlantica Biosphere Reserve <\/strong>is the <strong>largest biosphere reserve <\/strong>in the world. Human activities are strictly limited, with compatible research and monitoring supporting long-term conservation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Buffer Zone:<\/strong> The buffer zone surrounds or adjoins the core zone.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It accommodates activities compatible with conservation, including environmental education, scientific research and regulated ecotourism.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These activities improve ecological understanding while helping reduce pressures on strictly protected areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transition Area:<\/strong> The transition area supports settlements, livelihoods and sustainable economic activities.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Communities can practise responsible agriculture, sustainable forestry, ecotourism and other locally appropriate activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0This area promotes livelihoods while encouraging the sustainable use of natural resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Functions of Biosphere Reserves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Conservation<\/strong>: Protect biodiversity, genetic resources, ecosystems and landscapes, including associated cultural diversity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainable Economic Development: <\/strong>Encourage economic and social activities that respect ecological limits and local cultural values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scientific Support: <\/strong>Underpin scientific research, environmental monitoring, education, training and knowledge exchange to improve conservation practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Achieving Global Goals:<\/strong>\u00a0 They help in achieving global development targets such as those set by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, inter alia, on protecting and restoring significant portions of the Earth\u2019s ecosystems by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How are Biosphere Reserves Different from Other Protected Areas?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Protected areas<\/strong> such as National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries primarily focus on protecting wildlife and their habitats under India\u2019s wildlife protection laws.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biosphere reserve<\/strong>s adopt a broader approach.
