{"id":87537,"date":"2026-10-28T18:27:27","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T12:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=87537"},"modified":"2026-10-28T18:28:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T12:58:00","slug":"carbon-capture-utilisation-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/28-10-2026\/carbon-capture-utilisation-storage","title":{"rendered":"Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Environment&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NITI Aayog identified\u00a0 CCUS as critical for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, including steel, cement, oil and gas, petrochemicals, chemicals and fertilisers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It refers to a range of technologies that capture carbon dioxide (CO\u2082) emitted by industries such as steel, cement and power generation, preventing it from entering the atmosphere<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The captured CO\u2082 is either transferred into the earth or reused for industrial applications in various forms.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CCUS Process and Stages<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capture of carbon<\/strong>: Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) is the capture of CO 2 from industrial emissions and its cleaning, drying and compression.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>From Capture to Transport<\/strong>: The CO\u2082 captured is then delivered by pipeline, ship or other appropriate means to utilisation facilities or storage sites.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carbon Utilisation and Permanent Storage<\/strong>: It can be used in applications such as enhanced oil recovery, food and drinks, urea, green methanol and concrete, or permanently sequestered deep underground in geologic formations such as depleted oil and gas reservoirs, deep saline aquifers and basaltic rocks to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c9e0ec\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c9e0ec;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"316\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-192.png\" alt=\"carbon capture utilisation and storage\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-87538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-192.png 648w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-192-300x146.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Various Steps Taken<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Government of India has undertaken initiatives spanning research, policy and industry to advance CCUS development and reduce emissions.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These measures strengthen the foundation for India\u2019s Net Zero target by 2070.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Union Budget 2026\u201327, CCUS Scheme:<\/strong> Announced in February 2026, the Ministry of Finance allocated \u20b920,000 crore over five years to promote carbon capture, utilisation and storage in five major industrial sectors: Power, Steel, Cement, Refineries, and Chemicals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Department of Science &amp; Technology- CCUS R&amp;D Roadmap: <\/strong>Launched in December 2025, the roadmap provides strategic direction for CCUS research, funding, technology development and deployment, with a focus on commercial readiness, breakthrough technologies and enabling frameworks.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NITI Aayog CCUS Policy Framework &amp;
