width:440px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-75.png 453w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-75-300x236.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 453px) 100vw, 453px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges in Addressing Mental Health Issues in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Social stigma:<\/strong> Fear of discrimination and social labelling discourages individuals and families from acknowledging mental health conditions or seeking professional help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low mental health literacy: <\/strong>People fail to recognise symptoms of depression and other common mental disorders, delaying diagnosis and treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neglect of elderly people: <\/strong>Loneliness, social isolation and age-related challenges affect mental well-being, while families may mistake symptoms of depression for normal ageing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unequal access to care:<\/strong> Mental health professionals and specialised facilities are concentrated in urban areas, making treatment less accessible to people in rural and underserved regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Misinformation: <\/strong>Unverified claims and misconceptions can discourage people from seeking evidence-based medical care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives taken by India&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tele-MANAS:<\/strong> A 24&#215;7 national tele-mental health helpline to provide free counselling and psychological support, especially crucial during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integration through Ayushman Bharat and Primary Care:<\/strong> Over <strong>1.75 lakh Sub Health Centres (SHCs) <\/strong>and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) have been upgraded into <strong>Ayushman Arogya Mandirs,<\/strong> where mental health services are now part of Comprehensive Primary Health Care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), 1982: <\/strong>NMHP was launched to tackle the rising burden of mental disorders and the lack of adequate mental health services across India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>District Mental Health Programme (DMHP): <\/strong>The DMHP intervention was launched in 1996 and later integrated into the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is based on Karnataka&#8217;s successful<strong> &#8216;Bellary Model&#8217;
