The year 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Partnership: <\/strong>In 2025, India and Qatar have signed an agreement to elevate their ties to the level of a <strong>strategic partnership.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India currently has strategic partnerships with four other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council \u2013<\/strong> the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic and Trade Relations: <\/strong>In FY 2025-26, India&#8217;s bilateral trade with Qatar stood at USD 13.91 billion. India\u2019s export to Qatar during the period was USD 1.62 billion and India\u2019s imports from Qatar were USD 12.29 billion.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two sides also signed a <strong>double taxation avoidance treaty<\/strong> and also planned on <strong>doubling their trade by 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy:<\/strong> Qatar is the largest supplier of LNG to India (10.86 MMT for US$ 5.61 billion in FY 2025-26), it is also the <strong>largest supplier of LPG<\/strong> to India (4.58 MMT for US$ 2.67 billion in Financial Year 2025-26).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In FY 2025-26, the total bilateral hydrocarbon trade between the countries amounted to US$ 10.81 billion, accounting for <strong>77.71% of overall bilateral trade.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2024, QatarEnergy and Petronet LNG signed a 20-year agreement for the supply of 7.5 million tonnes of LNG annually, beginning in 2028.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence: <\/strong>The India-Qatar Defence Cooperation Agreement was signed in<strong> 2008 and extended for five years in 2018, <\/strong>it is managed through the <strong>Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC).<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India participates in the biennial <strong>Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exercise Zair-Al-Bahr<\/strong> is a joint naval exercise between the Indian Navy and the Qatar Emiri Naval Force (QENF).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Labor and Diaspora:<\/strong> Around 830,000 Indians in Qatar is testament to the close people-to-people ties that continue to nurture the cultural bonds.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Indian diaspora in Qatar plays a crucial role in the country&#8217;s development, particularly in construction and other sectors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional Cooperation: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)<\/strong> is a <strong>political and economic alliance<\/strong> of <strong>six Middle Eastern countries<\/strong>\u2014Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. It was established in<strong> 1981.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India engages regularly with GCC and aims to deepen its relationship with the GCC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Gulf Region<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Gulf Region typically refers to the countries surrounding the <strong>Persian Gulf in the Middle East.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It includes nations like <strong>Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This region is known for its <strong>vast oil reserves,<\/strong> which have significantly influenced global economics and politics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"eadccc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"654\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-5.webp\" alt=\"gulf region\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-86561\" style=\"--dominant-color: #eadccc; width:327px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-5.webp 654w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-5-300x266.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 654px) 100vw, 654px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of Qatar for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Energy Security: <\/strong>Qatar is a major supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India. These imports support India&#8217;s electricity generation, fertiliser production and industrial requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Diaspora:<\/strong> A large Indian community lives and works in Qatar, contributing to its economy and sending remittances to India. Their safety, welfare and labour rights are important bilateral concerns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maritime Security:<\/strong> Qatar&#8217;s location near the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies, makes regional stability important for India&#8217;s energy imports and commercial shipping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional Diplomacy:<\/strong> Qatar maintains diplomatic channels with various regional and international actors. Its engagement can support dialogue on conflicts, de-escalation and the protection of Indian interests in West Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges\/Concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Hamas\u2013Israel war<\/strong> and shipping attacks in the Red Sea affect India&#8217;s energy security and economic growth.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India remains cautious in Middle Eastern politics, balancing relations with the Gulf, Iran, and Israel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited Trade Diversification: <\/strong>Bilateral trade remains significantly influenced by hydrocarbons, leaving scope to expand cooperation in manufacturing, technology, services and other non-energy sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Delay in Connectivity Projects: <\/strong>The conflict has delayed progress for the I2U2 group since 2023.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India urges economic initiatives like<strong> I2U2 and IMEC<\/strong> to progress despite the conflict.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FTAs with GCC: <\/strong>Delays in finalizing the<strong> India\u2013GCC Free Trade Agreement (FTA)<\/strong> due to changes in the GCC\u2019s trade negotiator.
