class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Union Cabinet approved the proposal by the Ministry of Finance to commit \u20b910,000 crore of central government funding for the setting up of a<strong> Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Growth Fund<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About SME Growth Fund (SGF)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SME Growth Fund (SGF) <\/strong>is aimed at<strong> catalysing growth-oriented capital<\/strong> for India\u2019s SMEs and enabling the emergence of champion Indian enterprises across manufacturing, services, technology, innovation-driven sectors, and strategic value chains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Fund was first mentioned in the <strong>Union Budget 2026.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b6d5e6\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The SME Growth Fund is designed as a <strong>direct equity investment fund <\/strong>and will operate in the form of<strong> Alternative Investment Fund (AIF)<\/strong> established under the SGF framework.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An AIF is a <strong>privately pooled fund<\/strong> established in India that raises money from investors and invests it according to a defined policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Fund will provide <strong>patient equity capital<\/strong> to high-potential SMEs with demonstrated <strong>business viability and scalability.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strategic Focus of the SME Growth Fund<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Manufacturing at the Core:<\/strong> A major share of the SME Growth Fund\u2019s allocations will be directed towards<strong> small and medium manufacturing-focused enterprises.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Fund is intended to support firms seeking to expand manufacturing capacity, adopt advanced technologies, improve productivity and strengthen export competitiveness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extending Growth to Industrial Clusters:<\/strong> The Fund will also consider SMEs <strong>operating in industrial clusters in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is expected to support balanced regional industrial development, strengthen local supply chains class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Need for a Dedicated Growth Fund<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Capital for SMEs:<\/strong> Despite the wide presence of MSMEs across the economy, existing equity funds largely focus on<strong> early-stage enterprises covering Micro enterprises.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This creates scope to further expand access to growth equity capital for Small and Medium Enterprises.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By providing long-term capital, the initiative will enable <strong>Indian SMEs to scale operations, invest in technology and manufacturing capacity, expand into international markets, and integrate into global value chains.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Investments across industrial clusters,<\/strong> including those in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, will support balanced regional industrial development, reinforce local supply chains and generate high-quality employment opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is expected to support enterprises operating in <strong>sectors of national importance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The SME Growth Fund <strong>complements ongoing efforts to strengthen the SME secto<\/strong>r through reforms, digitalisation, credit support and ease of doing business measures.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By catalysing investments, the Fund will promote innovation-led industrialisation while advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This support for smaller enterprises reflects I<strong>ndia\u2019s broader effort to make growth more inclusive<\/strong>, with class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Classification of SMEs<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enterprises are classified as <strong>micro, small or medium<\/strong> based on investment in <strong>plant and machinery or equipment, and annual turnover.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the latest criteria, a <strong>small enterprise has investment of up to \u20b925 crore <\/strong>and turnover of up to<strong> \u20b9100 crore.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A medium enterprise<\/strong> has investment of up to <strong>\u20b9125 crore and turnover of up to \u20b9500 crore.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s MSME Ecosystem<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Contribution to the Economy:<\/strong> According to the Economic Survey 2025-26, MSMEs account for 31.1% of GDP, 35.4% of manufacturing output and 48.58% of exports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expanding Formal MSME Base:<\/strong> In 2026, total MSME registrations under Udyam and the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) reached ~9.78 crore.
