{"id":86266,"date":"2026-10-06T18:19:02","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T12:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=86266"},"modified":"2026-10-06T18:19:27","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T12:49:27","slug":"nobel-prize-medicine-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/06-10-2026\/nobel-prize-medicine-2026","title":{"rendered":"Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Science<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2026) <\/strong>was awarded for discoveries that enabled <strong>optogenetics<\/strong>, a technique that uses light to precisely control selected nerve cells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is one of the five original Nobel Prizes established by Alfred Nobel, awarded by the <strong>Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet<\/strong> for discoveries of major importance to <strong>medicine or human physiology<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2026, the prize carries <strong>12 million Swedish kronor (about \u20b911.5 crore)<\/strong>, shared equally among three laureates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Award in 2026: <\/strong>The 2026 laureates are:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Karl Deisseroth<\/strong> \u2013 Stanford University, USA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peter Hegemann<\/strong> \u2013 Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Georg Nagel<\/strong> \u2013 University of W\u00fcrzburg, Germany<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their work established the <strong>scientific foundations of optogenetics<\/strong>, enabling researchers to move from merely observing neural activity to <strong>testing the causal role of specific neurons and neural circuits<\/strong> in behaviour and emotions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Optogenetics?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Optogenetics combines <strong>genetic engineering and optics<\/strong> to control the activity of genetically selected cells using light.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Light-sensitive proteins<\/strong> called <strong>opsins<\/strong> are introduced into specific neurons.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These proteins <strong>regulate ion movement<\/strong> across the cell membrane when illuminated, thereby <strong>turning neuronal activity on or off<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It provides much greater temporal and cellular precision than conventional methods such as drugs or electrical stimulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Foundations of Optogenetics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The foundation was laid in the <strong>1990s<\/strong>, when Peter Hegemann studied the <strong>microscopic alga <\/strong><strong><em>Chlamydomonas<\/em><\/strong> and observed that light rapidly generated an electrical signal.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hegemann and Georg Nagel subsequently identified <strong>Channelrhodopsins<\/strong>, <strong>light-gated ion channels.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2)<\/strong> was particularly important as it could open in about <strong>0.2 milliseconds<\/strong>, allowing positively charged ions to enter cells and generate an electrical signal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experiments showed that transferring its gene into mammalian cells made them light-sensitive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Karl Deisseroth recognised the potential of combining this discovery with genetic targeting of particular neurons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"96aab4\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"783\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-32-1024x783.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-86267\" style=\"--dominant-color: #96aab4;
