{"id":86204,"date":"2026-10-05T18:27:41","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T12:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=86204"},"modified":"2026-10-05T18:28:18","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T12:58:18","slug":"animal-diplomacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/05-10-2026\/animal-diplomacy","title":{"rendered":"Animal Diplomacy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>recent US\u2013China bilateral meeting <\/strong>brought<strong> \u201cpanda diplomacy\u201d<\/strong> back into focus, with China agreeing to<strong> loan two giant pandas to the United States.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Panda Diplomacy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Panda diplomacy refers to <strong>China\u2019s long-standing practice of sending giant pandas to foreign countries<\/strong> as diplomatic gestures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It began in 1957, when China gifted pandas to the Soviet Union, followed by an exchange with the United States in 1972.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since <strong>1984<\/strong>, China has stopped gifting pandas and instead leases them under long-term agreements, usually for <strong>10 years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Animal Diplomacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Animal diplomacy:<\/strong> Refers to the strategic use of animals as gifts, loans or national symbols to strengthen diplomatic relations, project soft power and foster goodwill between countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Old Tradition:<\/strong> The practice dates back to Egyptian pharaohs sending African animals to ancient rulers in the Mediterranean.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Roman Empire, too, was known to display exotic species to demonstrate the extent of its territorial control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Form of Soft Power:<\/strong> The donor country or government can project soft power by bypassing formal channels and directly appealing to the recipient country\u2019s general public.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political Significance: <\/strong>Such an exchange signals that the donor trusts the recipient to prove a responsible host.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In cases of rare or endangered species,<\/strong> this places the onus of stewardship on the recipient with the expectation that it will ensure conservation of the animal(s) in an alien habitat.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>So, the well-being and health of these animals become the barometer of the diplomatic relationship itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Example of Animal Diplomacy: <\/strong>India-Namibia collaboration in 2022 under <strong>\u201cProject Cheetah\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In subsequent years, two more batches of African cheetahs arrived from South Africa and Botswana.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2026, <strong>India gifted five peacocks to the UN<\/strong>, to be housed at its European headquarters in Geneva.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Giant Pandas<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Common Name: <\/strong>Giant Panda.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scientific Name:<\/strong> Ailuropoda melanoleuca.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type:<\/strong> Mammals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diet<\/strong>: Omnivore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Average Life Span In The Wild: <\/strong>20 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Habitat:<\/strong> High in dense bamboo forests in the misty, rainy mountains of southwestern China.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the wild, giant pandas are<strong> now only found in China.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IUCN Status: Vulnerable<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: IE<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\"> The recent US\u2013China bilateral meeting brought \u201cpanda diplomacy\u201d back into focus, with China agreeing to loan two giant pandas to the United States. <\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong> Panda Diplomacy?
