{"id":85543,"date":"2026-09-25T18:01:40","date_gmt":"2026-09-25T12:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=85543"},"modified":"2026-09-25T18:02:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T12:32:19","slug":"india-space-sector-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/25-09-2026\/india-space-sector-reforms","title":{"rendered":"Space Sector Reforms to Make India Self-Reliant and Technologically Stronger"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Science and Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Major space-sector reforms undertaken by India have expanded private-sector participation and enabled the development of advanced, globally competitive space technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Reforms in the Space Sector of India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Establishment of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, 2020): <\/strong>Acts as a <strong>single-window regulator<\/strong> and facilitator for private companies, authorising and promoting their participation in space activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corporatisation via NewSpace India Limited (2019):<\/strong> It was set up as ISRO\u2019s commercial arm to transfer technology, manufacture satellites\/launch vehicles through industry, and provide commercial satellite services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Schemes to encourage the private sector have been implemented by IN-SPACe:\u00a0 <\/strong>Seed Fund Scheme, Pricing Support Policy, Mentorship Support, Design Lab for NGEs, Skill Development in Space Sector, ISRO facility utilisation support and technology transfer to non-governmental entities (NGEs).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The \u20b91,000 crore Venture Capital (VC) Fund under IN-SPACe <\/strong>aims to accelerate private participation in the space sector.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IN-SPACe also introduced the <strong>\u20b9500 crore Technology Adoption Fund (TAF).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Liberalised FDI Policy for Space:<\/strong> The revised policy permits up to <strong>74% automatic FDI<\/strong> in satellite manufacturing and operations, <strong>49% automatic FDI<\/strong> in launch vehicles and spaceports, and <strong>100% automatic FDI <\/strong>in the manufacturing of satellite components and subsystems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SpaceTech Innovation Network (SpIN)<\/strong>: SpIN is a one-of-its-kind public-private collaboration for start-ups and SMEs in the space industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b2d9ef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b2d9ef;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"549\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-195.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-85545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-195.png 549w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-195-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Emerging Private Space Ecosystem<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s space economy currently stands at $8.4 billion, accounting for 2\u20133% of the global space economy. It is expected to be <strong>$40\u201345 billion by 2030.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Indian Space Policy 2023 <\/strong>led to the entry of private players to space-related activities in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies such as<strong> Pixxel, Dhruva Space, Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Bellatrix Aerospace<\/strong> have emerged as <strong>pioneers of a new space era.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skyroot Aerospace became <strong>India&#8217;s first space-tech unicorn.<\/strong> Its <strong>Vikram-1<\/strong> became the <strong>first privately developed Indian orbital-class rocket<\/strong> to successfully place a payload into <strong>Low Earth Orbit (LEO).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pixxel Space<\/strong> is building<strong> hyperspectral imaging satellites<\/strong> that provide Earth observation data to commercial customers and government agencies in India, Europe and the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c5d6e1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c5d6e1;\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Self-Reliant Space Transportation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has operationalised<strong> four indigenous launch vehicles<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV),\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV),\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III), and\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These launch vehicles support<strong> Earth observation, communication, navigation, space science and exploration,<\/strong> besides commercial launches for national and international customers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From 2023 to 2026, India successfully completed <strong>12 launch vehicle missions<\/strong>, carrying <strong>11 national satellites<\/strong> and<strong> nine satellites<\/strong> for international customers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Space Achievements of India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Chandrayaan-3 (2023)<\/strong> made India the first country to soft-land near the Moon\u2019s south pole and the fourth nation to soft-land on the Moon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan)<\/strong> was inserted into the Martian orbit in 2014, making it India\u2019s maiden interplanetary mission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AstroSat,<\/strong> India\u2019s first dedicated Indian astronomy mission aimed at studying celestial sources in X-ray, optical and UV spectral bands simultaneously.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aditya-L1 (2023)<\/strong> is India\u2019s first space-based mission to study the Sun, positioned nearly 1.5 million km from the Earth at the Sun-Earth L1 point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space Docking Experiment (SPADEX) 2025<\/strong>, made India the fourth nation to demonstrate autonomous space docking and undocking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) <\/strong>provides positioning, navigation and timing across India and up to 1,500 km beyond its boundary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the challenges?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dependence on critical technologies:<\/strong> India continues to face gaps in areas such as advanced propulsion, high-end sensors, space-grade electronics, materials and semiconductor components.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure constraints:<\/strong> Limited access to specialised testing facilities, launch infrastructure and other space-grade facilities can increase the time and cost of technology development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global competition: <\/strong>Indian companies compete with well-established international firms that have greater access to capital, mature supply chains and advanced technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited private-sector scale:<\/strong> Most Indian space start-ups are still at an early stage and face difficulties in scaling technologies from prototypes to commercially viable systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s space-sector reforms have transformed the sector from a predominantly government-led domain into a growing public\u2013private ecosystem.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustained investment in indigenous technologies, private innovation, skilled human capital and enabling regulation can help India build a self-reliant, globally
