class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently, the <strong>Make in India<\/strong> completed its 12 years, with India\u2019s manufacturing expansion spanning electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, steel, railways, defence and strategic technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Make in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make in India was launched on <strong>25 September 2014<\/strong> with the aim to make India a global hub for <strong>manufacturing, design and innovation<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its broad approach was based on facilitating investment, encouraging innovation, improving infrastructure and simplifying government processes under the principle of <strong>\u2018Minimum Government, Maximum Governance\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over time, the initiative evolved into <strong>Make in India 2.0<\/strong> expanding to <strong>27 sectors, 15 manufacturing and 12 services sectors<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Achievements of Make in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Growth in Manufacturing:<\/strong> Manufacturing GVA expanded at a CAGR of <strong>10.88% in 2022-23 to 2025-26<\/strong> (at constant prices).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manufacturing <strong>Index of Industrial Production (IIP)<\/strong> increased <strong>7% during April-July 2026<\/strong> over the corresponding period of 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electronics production<\/strong> rose nearly <strong>seven-fold<\/strong>, from about \u20b91.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to <strong>\u20b913.11 lakh crore in 2025-26<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vehicle production<\/strong> was 31.03 million units in 2024-25, which was about 33% higher than in 2014-15.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crude steel output<\/strong> grew to 170 million tonnes from 81.7 million tonnes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indigenous defence manufacturing<\/strong> has grown from \u20b946,429 crore to a record \u20b91.78 lakh crore in 2025-26.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s pharmaceutical sector<\/strong> is presently the <strong>third largest in the world<\/strong> <strong>by volume<\/strong> and 11th largest by value, with sales of \u20b95,08,630 crore in 2025-26.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bfdaea\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bfdaea;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"282\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expanding Domestic Capabilities: <\/strong>India has produced indigenous <strong>VIKRAM3201 and KALPANA3201 microprocessors<\/strong> for space applications.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solar module production<\/strong> capacity has grown from 2.3 GW in 2014 to 192 GW in June 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indigenous capabilities<\/strong> have emerged in <strong>EV drive systems<\/strong>, <strong>aircraft structures, railway components and nuclear components<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effort to develop capabilities in strategically essential technology is a pilot plant for Nd-Fe-B rare-earth permanent magnets at ARCI, Hyderabad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Capital Goods and Machinery: <\/strong>The <strong>manufacturing of capital goods and heavy engineering<\/strong> equipment was close to quadruple at \u20b95.70 lakh crore in 2024-25 from \u20b92.87 lakh crore in 2019-20.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Earthmoving and mining machinery<\/strong> gained 160.3 percent, machine tools 132.2 percent, and heavy electrical equipment 103.5 percent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reforms and Investment: <\/strong>Make in India has been supported by institutional reforms and investment facilitation:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>$843 billion cumulative FDI<\/strong> during 2014-15 to 2025-26.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Single Window System<\/strong> <strong>(NSWS)<\/strong> covering more that <strong>327 Central and 3,452 State approvals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India Industrial Land Bank mapping <strong>4,220 industrial parks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PM GatiShakti&#8217;s Network Planning Group evaluating <strong>396 projects worth \u20b918.66 lakh crore<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PLI initiatives in 14 sectors supported production and sales of \u20b923.8 lakh crore and 14.6 lakh employment, and Startup India had over 2.54 lakh recognised startups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>New Initiatives Launched: <\/strong>The next phase is increasingly concentrated on strategic sectors:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Semicon 2.0:<\/strong> \u20b91.275 lakh crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme:<\/strong> \u20b962,500 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojana (BHAVYA):<\/strong> \u20b933,660 crore for 100 industrial parks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rare-earth magnet scheme:<\/strong> \u20b97,280 crore<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bharat Audyogik Vikas Yojana Rasayan (BHAVYA Rasayan):<\/strong> \u20b93,030 crore for three chemical parks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PLI for Specialty Steel:<\/strong> covering advanced categories such as CRGO steel, titanium alloys and coated steel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Related Issues &amp; Concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher production does not automatically translate into <strong>higher domestic value addition, mass employment or stronger global value-chain integration<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India continues to face challenges relating to MSME competitiveness, skill gaps, technology acquisition, logistics, critical-input dependence and uneven integration with global manufacturing networks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The key challenge, therefore, is to ensure that manufacturing growth becomes <strong>employment-intensive, innovation-driven and export-oriented<\/strong>, rather than remaining concentrated in selected sectors or stages of production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India needs to move from <strong>assembly-led manufacturing towards deeper value addition<\/strong> by:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integrating MSMEs into global value chains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increasing public and private <strong>R&amp;D and industry-academia collaboration<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing specialised skills for semiconductors, EVs, aerospace, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building reliable domestic supply chains for <strong>critical minerals, rare earths and strategic components<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Linking industrial incentives more closely with <strong>productivity, exports, innovation and technology transfer<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improving logistics, infrastructure and ease of doing business at the State and local levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After 12 years, the character of Make in India is changing.
