{"id":85307,"date":"2026-09-22T18:42:52","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T13:12:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=85307"},"modified":"2026-09-22T18:43:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T13:13:09","slug":"gender-snapshot-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/22-09-2026\/gender-snapshot-2026","title":{"rendered":"The Gender Snapshot 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/Gender Equality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Gender Snapshot 2026<\/strong><strong>report <\/strong>says <strong>not one target <\/strong>under the <strong>Sustainable Development Goal on gender equality<\/strong> is on track to be met by 2030.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Released by: <\/strong>UN Women and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Goals Off Track: <\/strong>Decades of progress on gender equality are being stalled or reversed at a time when no target under the UN-mandated Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on gender equality is on track to be met by 2030.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sustainable Development Goal 5 <\/strong>focuses on closing the gender gap and ensuring equal opportunities for all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Funding for gender equality<\/strong> has fallen to its lowest level since 2021, with women\u2019s rights organisations among the worst affected.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>42% of UN entities reported a weakening of their gender equality efforts amid funding cuts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Political Representation: <\/strong>Six in seven countries are led by men, while women hold 27.4% of seats in national parliaments in 2026, up from 22.3% in 2015.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Women\u2019s representation in local government has stagnated at 35.6% since 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stacked Glass Ceiling:<\/strong> Women hold only 6% of corporate chief executive positions globally and lead fewer than 20% of the highest courts, leaving decisions shaping business, law, employment and the global economy largely in the hands of men.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unpaid Care Burden:<\/strong> Women and girls also continue to bear a disproportionate unpaid care burden, spending 2.5 times more hours than men on unpaid domestic and care work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Early Marriage: <\/strong>Nearly one in five girls is married before the age of 18, while an estimated 230 million women and girls worldwide are survivors of female genital mutilation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Suggestions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strengthen national gender equality mechanisms<\/strong> through strong mandates, adequate staffing and dedicated, predictable resources.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extend gender-responsive budgeting<\/strong> and put comprehensive systems in place to track progress and impacts.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Take measures to achieve inclusive participation <\/strong>by enabling women and girls from the most marginalized groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dismantle discriminatory social norms <\/strong>by transforming narratives about women in leadership;
