Ramasamy in Chennai.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About E.V. Ramasamy (1879-1973)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>E.V. Ramasamy, popularly known as <strong>\u201cPeriyar\u201d (the Great One), <\/strong>was born on September 17, 1879, in Erode, Tamil Nadu.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was an <strong>Indian social activist and politician<\/strong> who started the <strong>Self-Respect Movement in 1925<\/strong> to challenge caste hierarchy and promote <strong>social equality, rationalism and self-respect<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Periyar started his political career as a <strong>Congress worker<\/strong> in his hometown Erode. However, over the question of separate dining for Brahmin and non-Brahmin students at <strong>Gurukkulam<\/strong>, a Congress-sponsored school, he <strong>resigned from the party in 1925<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Periyar\u2019s fame spread beyond the Tamil region during the <strong>Vaikom Satyagraha (1924\u201325)<\/strong>, a mass movement demanding that lower-caste persons be allowed to use public roads around the famous <strong>Vaikom temple<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the 1940s, he envisaged a Dravida homeland of Dravida Nadu, and launched a political party, <strong>Dravidar Kazhagam (DK).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Journal: <\/strong><em>Kudi Arasu<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do you know?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2021, then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.
