It is expected to be <strong>$40\u201345 billion by 2030.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Indian Space Policy 2023 <\/strong>led to the entry of private players to space-related activities in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies such as<strong> Pixxel, Dhruva Space, Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Bellatrix Aerospace<\/strong> have emerged as <strong>pioneers of a new space era.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d4e4f1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d4e4f1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"248\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-138.png\" alt=\"private space sector india\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-85080\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Skyroot Aerospace became <strong>India&#8217;s first space-tech unicorn.<\/strong> Its <strong>Vikram-1<\/strong> became the <strong>first privately developed Indian orbital-class rocket<\/strong> to successfully place a payload into <strong>Low Earth Orbit (LEO).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pixxel Space<\/strong> is building<strong> hyperspectral imaging satellites<\/strong> that provide Earth observation data to commercial customers and government agencies in India, Europe and the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Reforms in the Space Sector of India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Establishment of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, 2020): <\/strong>Acts as a <strong>single-window regulator<\/strong> and facilitator for private companies, authorising and promoting their participation in space activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corporatisation via NewSpace India Limited (2019):<\/strong> It was set up as ISRO\u2019s commercial arm to transfer technology, manufacture satellites\/launch vehicles through industry, and provide commercial satellite services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Schemes to encourage the private sector have been implemented by IN-SPACe:\u00a0 <\/strong>Seed Fund Scheme, Pricing Support Policy, Mentorship Support, Design Lab for NGEs, Skill Development in Space Sector, ISRO facility utilisation support and technology transfer to non-governmental entities (NGEs).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The \u20b91,000 crore Venture Capital (VC) Fund under IN-SPACe <\/strong>aims to accelerate private participation in the space sector.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IN-SPACe also introduced the <strong>\u20b9500 crore Technology Adoption Fund (TAF).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Liberalised FDI Policy for Space:<\/strong> The revised policy permits up to <strong>74% automatic FDI<\/strong> in satellite manufacturing and operations, <strong>49% automatic FDI<\/strong> in launch vehicles and spaceports, and <strong>100% automatic FDI <\/strong>in the manufacturing of satellite components and subsystems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SpaceTech Innovation Network (SpIN)<\/strong>: SpIN is a one-of-its-kind public-private collaboration for start-ups and SMEs in the space industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b2d9ef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"549\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-139.png\" alt=\"major reforms in the space sector of india\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-85081\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b2d9ef; aspect-ratio:1.4372494477624151;width:519px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-139.png 549w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-139-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Technology Transfers\u00a0 <\/strong>: India is gradually commercialising and transferring its major space launch systems to the private sector to increase its participation in the global space economy.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) was operationalised in 2024 after three developmental flights. It takes around 3 days for 6 people to assemble it at a cost of roughly \u20b930 crore as against the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which takes about 70 days, 60 workers and \u20b9100 crore.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has secured the \u20b9511-crore SSLV technology-transfer contract in 2025 and would produce a minimum of two vehicles using Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) protocols prior to independently commercialising them after August 2027.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has been commercialised in 2022 with a consortium of HAL and Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T) and ISRO has floated another Expression of Interest (EoI) for transfer of technology.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The biggest launch vehicle of ISRO, Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM3) is also being thrown available for private manufacturing with a fresh EoI being released in 2026 after the first attempt in 2024 to attract a successful bid failed.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN-SPACe) has also encouraged commercial engagement in operating the future Small Satellite Launch Complex (SLC) at Kulasekarapattinam, Tamil Nadu, with ISRO providing technical assistance, training and operational support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of the Privatisation of the Space Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Private participation aims to i<strong>ncrease launch frequency, reduce costs, attract investment<\/strong>, and expand India\u2019s presence in the global space economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Privatisation introduces <strong>competition into the space industry<\/strong>, which can drive both efficiency and innovation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private players facilitate the <strong>commercialisation of space applications<\/strong> and services in agriculture, disaster management, urban planning, navigation, and communication, as well as in other sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private companies have a <strong>greater degree of autonomy <\/strong>in making decisions, which enables them to take up new projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It helps to <strong>generate employment,<\/strong> enable modern technology absorption and make the sector self-reliant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the concerns?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preserving Core Expertise:<\/strong> The commercialisation can result in the erosion of ISRO\u2019s in-house expertise and end-to-end technological capabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Public Investment: <\/strong>Technologies and infrastructure developed using public funds raise <strong>concerns regarding transparent valuation<\/strong>, accountability and adequate returns to the nation during technology transfer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Missions: <\/strong>Retaining strong in-house capabilities remains important for complex programmes such as Gaganyaan, Chandrayaan-4 and 5, the Bharatiya Antariksh Station, and future Mars and Venus missions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India needs a c<strong>omplementary public\u2013private model<\/strong> in which private industry expands manufacturing and commercial services while <strong>ISRO retains expertise<\/strong> in advanced R&amp;D, strategic technologies, system integration and critical national missions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technology transfer should be accompanied by transparent valuation, performance standards, institutional safeguards and mechanisms to preserve critical knowledge within the public sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/private-participation-not-at-the-cost-of-isros-capabilities-staff-in-fresh-note-10882868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\"> Recently, ISRO employee associations raised concerns over the proposed transfer of launch-vehicle manufacturing and spaceport operations. <\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong> India\u2019s Emerging Private Space Ecosystem <\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\"> India\u2019s space economy currently stands at $8.4 billion, accounting for 2\u20133% of the global space economy.
