no legal basis to decide on arrangements related to Indian territory under illegal occupation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pakistan and China signed a Boundary Agreement in <strong>1963<\/strong>, under which Pakistan purportedly ceded around <strong>5,800 sq km of territory<\/strong> in the <strong>Shaksgam Valley to China.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The first meeting of the newly constituted <strong>Pakistan-China Boundary Joint Commission<\/strong> was held in Islamabad.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pakistan has stated that the commission is intended to promote border management, joint surveys, trade flows and people-to-people connectivity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India&#8217;s Position on the Boundary Joint Commission<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India maintains that the <strong>entire Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh <\/strong>are <strong>integral and inalienable parts of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India considers the <strong>1963 Sino-Pakistan Boundary Agreement illegal and invalid<\/strong>, as Pakistan lacked the legal authority to alter the status of Indian territory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has rejected attempts by China and Pakistan to undertake boundary cooperation involving territories claimed by India, arguing that such arrangements cannot affect India&#8217;s sovereignty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Geographical Significance of Shaksgam Valley<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Shaksgam Valley<strong> lies north of the Karakoram range<\/strong>, adjoining China&#8217;s Xinjiang region and Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The territory also forms part of the wider <strong>India-China-Pakistan strategic triangle<\/strong> in the western Himalayas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the 1963 agreement, <strong>Pakistan agreed to transfer control of the territory to China,<\/strong> subject to a future settlement of the Kashmir dispute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div to the<strong> China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) <\/strong>because parts of the corridor pass through areas of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CPEC forms an important component of <strong>China&#8217;s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)<\/strong> and connects Kashgar in Xinjiang with Gwadar in Balochistan through Gilgit-Baltistan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Implications for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Territorial Sovereignty: <\/strong>China-Pakistan arrangements over areas claimed by India may create attempts to legitimise the 1963 agreement and the transfer of the Shaksgam Valley.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Border Security: <\/strong>Greater China-Pakistan connectivity can strengthen infrastructure and logistical links near India\u2019s northern and western frontiers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Convergence: <\/strong>The commission further institutionalises
