and Quizlet<\/strong> can make learning gamified, interactive and sensorial rather than purely rote-based.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI can generate stories, worksheets, quizzes and differentiated assessments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similarly, platforms such as <strong>Seesaw<\/strong> can document children&#8217;s learning through writing, videos and reflections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In India,<\/strong> governments are exploring AI pilots in government and rural schools, particularly where shortages of quality teachers and learning resources persist.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>However, policy remains evolutionary rather than based on a single comprehensive framework for GenAI in school education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arguments Favouring GenAI in Schools<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Personalised Learning:<\/strong> AI can provide alternative explanations according to a child&#8217;s learning level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Teacher Augmentation:<\/strong> A teacher can ask AI for visual or activity-based ways of explaining difficult concepts such as fractions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resource Creation:<\/strong> AI reduces preparation time by generating lesson plans, slide decks, stories, worksheets and assessments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inclusion:<\/strong> Translation and adaptive tools can make educational content accessible to children with diverse needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bridging Resource Gaps:<\/strong> In rural schools, AI can supplement teachers where specialist resources are scarce.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The key principle is that <strong>AI should extend the teacher, not replace the teacher<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schools are not merely knowledge centres; they are spaces where children learn empathy, judgement, collaboration and how to become responsible human beings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arguments Against Unrestricted Use<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Over-reliance:<\/strong> If a child simply enters homework into ChatGPT, copies the response and submits it, the child loses the crucial process of trial, error and reasoning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learning often occurs in the \u2018<strong>liminal space\u2019<\/strong> between not knowing and understanding, a period of productive struggle in which ideas develop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive technological assistance can turn AI into a <strong>cognitive crutch.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other concerns include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hallucinated or factually incorrect answers;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weakening of independent problem-solving and creativity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plagiarism and assessment-integrity problems;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>algorithmic and linguistic bias;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collection and misuse of children&#8217;s data;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unequal access, potentially widening the digital divide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thus, the issue is not merely <strong>AI versus no AI<\/strong>, but <em>how much cognitive work should remain with the child<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Specific Concerns for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India needs to consider its <strong>digital divide, multilingual environment, uneven teacher capacity and rural-urban disparities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An AI tool trained predominantly on global datasets may perform poorly with Indian accents, languages or local contexts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moreover, allowing AI to substitute for teachers could institutionalise inequality rather than solve it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Privacy safeguards are especially important because children&#8217;s educational and behavioural data are sensitive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Related Efforts &amp; Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UNESCO&#8217;s <strong>Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research<\/strong> advocates human-centred regulation, data protection and age-appropriate use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OECD&#8217;s <strong>Digital Education Outlook 2026<\/strong> similarly emphasises purposeful, pedagogically sound digital transformation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In India, the <strong>National Education Policy (NEP) 2020<\/strong>, the <strong>National Digital Education Architecture (NDEAR)<\/strong> and initiatives around AI literacy and digital learning provide a foundation for technology-enabled education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government AI pilots can be useful laboratories for developing locally appropriate safeguards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>blanket ban is neither practical nor necessarily desirable<\/strong>. Since children encounter AI through search engines, email, games and the Internet at home, schools should become places where they learn to <strong>question, verify and responsibly use AI<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India should adopt an <strong>age-graded, risk-based framework<\/strong>: stronger restrictions for early primary years; supervised and purpose-specific use in higher classes; mandatory teacher verification; privacy-by-design; AI-literacy curricula; and assessments that reward the <em>process<\/em> of thinking rather than merely the final answer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A useful classroom rule is: <strong>\u2018Think first, write second, ask AI to verify last\u2019.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The objective should not be to keep children away from AI, but to ensure that <strong>AI remains a tool in a child&#8217;s hands, not a substitute for the child&#8217;s mind or the teacher&#8217;s wisdom<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Daily Mains Practice Question<\/strong><br><strong>[Q] <\/strong>Should India ban, regulate or integrate Generative AI in school education?
