It is estimated that:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>60 GW installed capacity<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>300 billion kWh annual generation<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than <strong>three times the Three Gorges Dam\u2019s generation<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The project involves a reservoir, reportedly around <strong>Mainling<\/strong>, upstream of Nyingchi although described as <strong>run-of-the-river<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Yarlung Tsangpo ( Zangbo) River<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It <strong>originates from Chemayungdung Glacier<\/strong> in <strong>Tibet,<\/strong> and enters <strong>Arunachal Pradesh,<\/strong> where it is known as the <strong>Siang.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Assam,<\/strong> it is joined by tributaries such as <strong>Dibang and Lohit,<\/strong> and is called the <strong>Brahmaputra<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The river then enters<strong> Bangladesh<\/strong>, and makes its way to the Bay of Bengal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The basin<\/strong> spreads approximately 5,80,000 square kilometers across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/14-02-2025\/china-dam-project-concerns\">China <\/a>(50.5%), India (33.3%), Bangladesh (8.1%) and Bhutan (7.8%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Concerns of the Project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ecological &amp; Environmental Concerns:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Disaster Risk<\/strong>: Seismic risks as the project is in a highly earthquake prone Himalayan region.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Climate &amp; cascading hazards:<\/strong> Glacier\/GLOF risks amplified by construction in fragile permafrost\/steep terrain; extreme rainfall events more likely under climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biodiversity: <\/strong>Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is a global hotspot, dam can impact biodiversity.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geopolitical Risks:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Water control &amp; leverage: <\/strong>China as upper riparian can regulate timing and volume of flow. Risk of reduced dry-season discharge or sudden releases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geopolitical signalling:<\/strong> Project near disputed border strengthens China\u2019s presence in a sensitive sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s vulnerability:<\/strong> Brahmaputra vital for Arunachal (Siang), Assam and further downstream Bangladesh. India lacks binding water-sharing treaty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Competition over Water: <\/strong>The Brahmaputra basin involves the interests of China, India and Bangladesh.
