{"id":83510,"date":"2026-08-31T18:25:54","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T12:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=83510"},"modified":"2026-08-31T18:26:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T12:56:29","slug":"india-japan-economic-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/31-08-2026\/india-japan-economic-partnership","title":{"rendered":"India-Japan Economic Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry concluded his official visit to Japan <strong>aimed at accelerating Japanese investment in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> To advance the target of <strong>JPY 10 trillion in Japanese private investment<\/strong> in India over the next decade, agreed upon during the PM&#8217;s visit to Japan in 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A series of high-level meetings <\/strong>with Japanese government leaders, financial institutions and business executives were held to accelerate investment, strengthen industrial partnerships and deepen economic cooperation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India presented a six-pillar strategy<\/strong> covering chip design, semiconductor machinery and materials, fabrication, ATMP\/OSAT, research and development, and talent development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The visit provided <strong>fresh momentum to the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, <\/strong>with discussions covering trade, investment, technology, manufacturing and resilient supply chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India-Japan Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Establishment of Relations: <\/strong>After WWII, India opted for a separate Peace Treaty with Japan, signed in 1952, marking the start of formal diplomatic relations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India and Japan have instituted a 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting<\/strong> since 2018. Three rounds of the 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Meeting have already been held so far.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Growth in Bilateral Ties:<\/strong> India-Japan bilateral relations were elevated to Global Partnership in 2000, Strategic and Global Partnership in 2006, and Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Synergy:<\/strong> India\u2019s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) align closely with Japan\u2019s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) policy.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bilateral Trade:<\/strong> I<strong>ndia- Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) <\/strong>came into effect in 2011. India&#8217;s total trade with Japan in FY25-26 is USD 27.48 billion, with Exports of USD 6.04 billion and Imports of USD 21.44 billion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2024-25, India ranked 18th in Japan&#8217;s total trade with 1.4% share while Japan ranked 17th in India&#8217;s total trade with 2.1% share.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collaboration on Global Initiatives: <\/strong>Japan and India cooperate in initiatives like the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries work together in multilateral frameworks like the Japan-Australia-India-U.S. Quad and the India-Japan-Australia Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (SCRI).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence and Security: <\/strong>Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation (2008), Defence Cooperation and Exchanges MoU (2014), Information Protection Agreement (2015), Reciprocal Provision of Supplies and Services Agreement (2020), and co-development of the UNICORN naval mast (2024).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exercises: <\/strong>Malabar (with the US and Australia), Milan (multilateral naval), JIMEX (bilateral maritime), Dharma Guardian (Army), and Coast Guard cooperation are held regularly.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2024-25 saw the participation of service chiefs in India and Japan, strengthening interoperability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Development and Infrastructure Cooperation: <\/strong>Japan has been India\u2019s largest ODA donor since <strong>1958<\/strong>, supporting critical infrastructure and human development projects. Japan&#8217;s ODA disbursement to India in 2024-25 stood at about JPY 440 billion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail <\/strong>is the flagship project symbolising advanced technology transfer and skill development.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Investment: <\/strong>FDI Equity Inflow from 2000 to 2026 to India have been around US$ 48.14 billion ranking <strong>Japan fifth among source countries for FDI<\/strong> and accounting for 6% of total FDI into India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Japanese FDI into India has mainly been in automobile, electrical equipment, telecommunications, chemical, financial (insurance) and pharmaceutical sectors.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India-Japan Act East Forum: <\/strong>Established in 2017, it aims to provide a platform for India-Japan collaboration under the rubric of India&#8217;s &#8220;Act East Policy&#8221; and Japan&#8217;s &#8220;Vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific&#8221;.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space Collaboration:<\/strong> ISRO and JAXA collaborate in X-ray astronomy, satellite navigation, lunar exploration, and the Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2016, they signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) for peaceful space exploration and use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both sides are cooperating on the <strong>Lunar Polar Exploration Mission<\/strong> to explore the moon&#8217;s south polar region- scheduled for launch in <strong>2026-27.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tourism: <\/strong>2023-24 was celebrated as the Year of Tourism Exchange, with the theme \u201cConnecting Himalayas with Mount Fuji\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diaspora: <\/strong>About 54,000 Indians live in Japan, mainly IT professionals and engineers.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emerging Focus Areas: <\/strong>Digital cooperation (semiconductors, startups), clean energy, supply chain resilience, industrial competitiveness, and skill development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Areas of Concern<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trade Imbalance:<\/strong> There is a significant trade imbalance, with Japan exporting more to India than India exports to Japan, creating a need for better reciprocal trade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural and Language Barriers:<\/strong> Despite strong ties, differences in language, culture, and business practices pose challenges to deeper integration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited People-to-People Exchanges: <\/strong>The scale of people-to-people interactions is still limited, impacting deeper mutual understanding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Constraints:<\/strong> Despite improvements, some areas in India still lack the infrastructure necessary to support large-scale Japanese investments effectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Different Economic Priorities:<\/strong> India\u2019s focus on rapid economic growth may sometimes contrast with Japan&#8217;s emphasis on sustainable development and technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enhance Trade and Investment: <\/strong>Focus on reducing the trade imbalance by increasing Indian exports to Japan and encouraging Japanese investment in India\u2019s manufacturing and technology sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Boost People-to-People Connections: <\/strong>Increase cultural exchanges, tourism, and educational collaborations to deepen mutual understanding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology and Innovation Partnership: <\/strong>Leverage Japan&#8217;s expertise in technology and India\u2019s growing digital sector to collaborate in AI, robotics, renewable energy, and space exploration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Address Environmental Concerns: <\/strong>Increase cooperation on environmental sustainability, climate change, and disaster resilience to support both countries&#8217;
