{"id":83439,"date":"2026-08-29T18:23:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T12:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=83439"},"modified":"2026-08-29T18:23:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T12:53:16","slug":"indias-growth-paradox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/29-08-2026\/indias-growth-paradox","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Growth Paradox: Economic Rise Amid Persistent Regional Disparities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are <strong>substantial gaps in per capita income<\/strong> and development across states in India while it has emerged as one of the world&#8217;s largest economies since the <strong>1991 economic reforms.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Growth: From the 1991 Reforms Till Now<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>LPG Reforms 1991<\/strong> (liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation) integrated India more closely with the global economy and accelerated growth.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is now the <strong>world\u2019s sixth-largest economy<\/strong> in <strong>nominal terms,<\/strong> behind only five economies i.e. the United States, China, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is the <strong>third-largest in purchasing power parity\u00a0 (PPP) terms<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economic activity tends to cluster around regions with existing infrastructure, markets, skilled labour and industrial networks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consequently, growth has altered the composition of leading states more often than it has enabled sustained convergence among lagging states.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Growth in India\u2019s Per Capita Income<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s per capita income has increased manifold since the reform era, reflecting significant economic transformation and poverty reduction.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>But, India remains a <strong>lower-middle-income economy<\/strong>, and its per capita income continues to <strong>lag behind that of many countries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to the <strong>International Monetary Fund (IMF)<\/strong>, India\u2019s per capita income has <strong>risen more than 40 times in three and a half decades<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>But, on a <strong>per capita income basis,<\/strong> India <strong>trails more than 140 nations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It reflects India&#8217;s demographic challenge: a large population makes it difficult for aggregate economic growth to translate automatically into high average incomes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For India to achieve developed-country status by 2047, rapid and sustained growth in <strong>per capita income<\/strong>, rather than GDP alone, will be crucial.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Achievements: <\/strong>India\u2019s post-reform journey has witnessed:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expansion of the services and digital economy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Growth of a large middle class and improved consumption levels;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater integration with global trade and investment;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of world-class capabilities in IT, pharmaceuticals, space and digital public infrastructure; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved infrastructure and financial inclusion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These achievements demonstrate the transformative potential of reforms, but their benefits remain unevenly distributed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concerns and Issues: Challenge of Regional Disparities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The most persistent concern is <strong>inter-state inequality<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bihar and Uttar Pradesh<\/strong> have consistently remained among the lowest-income states, while their per capita incomes have fallen substantially relative to the national average over the long term.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jharkhand <\/strong>too has remained a lagging state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conversely, states such as<strong> Delhi, Goa and, more recently, Karnataka<\/strong> have remained or emerged among the higher-income economies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Maharashtra and Punjab<\/strong> illustrate that historical advantages do not guarantee continued relative leadership; population growth, structural rigidities, agricultural dependence and external shocks can affect relative performance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>GST&#8217;s destination-based structure<\/strong> may have supported consumption measurement and revenues in poorer states, but it alone cannot ensure structural convergence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other challenges include inadequate human capital, weak industrial ecosystems, uneven infrastructure, climate vulnerability and limited employment opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead: Road to Viksit Bharat@2047<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India&#8217;s development strategy must shift from merely pursuing <strong>high GDP growth to broad-based and inclusive growth<\/strong>.
