{"id":83433,"date":"2026-08-29T18:19:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T12:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=83433"},"modified":"2026-08-29T18:19:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T12:49:26","slug":"india-us-javelin-missile-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/29-08-2026\/india-us-javelin-missile-deal","title":{"rendered":"India-US Deal To Procure Javelin Anti-tank Guided Missile Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR; GS3\/Defence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India and the United States have signed a \u20b9292-crore government-to-government deal for around <strong>60 Javelin anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) <\/strong>for the Indian Army.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the Javelin<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>FGM-148 Javelin<\/strong> is a <strong>man-portable, fire-and-forget ATGM<\/strong>, developed and produced by the <strong>Javelin Joint Venture of Lockheed Martin and RTX<\/strong> for the US military.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is primarily designed to destroy <strong>tanks and other armoured vehicles<\/strong>, but can also engage <strong>bunkers, fortified positions and buildings<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its <strong>infrared seeker locks onto the target before launch<\/strong>, eliminating the need for continuous guidance.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its key feature is <strong>top-attack capability<\/strong>. After launch, the missile climbs to around <strong>150 metres<\/strong> before diving onto the target from above, where tank armour is generally weaker.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>FGM-148F variant<\/strong> has a range of around <strong>4.75 km<\/strong>. The Javelin first saw combat during the <strong>2003 US-led invasion of Iraq<\/strong> and gained renewed prominence after <strong>Ukraine used it against Russian armoured forces<\/strong> following Russia\u2019s invasion in 2022.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why does India need it<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Indian Army has historically operated systems such as the <strong>French-origin Milan-2T<\/strong> and <strong>Soviet-origin 9M113 Konkurs-M<\/strong>, which are older-generation ATGMs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s indigenous <strong>NAG<\/strong>, developed by <strong>DRDO<\/strong>, is a <strong>third-generation, fire-and-forget ATGM<\/strong> with top-attack capability, deployed from platforms such as <strong>NAMICA<\/strong> and the <strong>ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter)<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, <strong>Javelin is a man-portable ATGM<\/strong>, offering a capability that is different from the primarily platform-based NAG and making it a useful addition to the Army\u2019s anti-armour arsenal.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India &#8211; US Defence Ties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Defence ties have transformed from<strong> transactional to a Major Defense Partnership (2016).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guided by mechanisms such as:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2+2 Ministerial Dialogue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) (2012)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Military Cooperation Group (MCG)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is designated as<strong> \u201cMajor Defense Partner\u201d<\/strong> and given<strong> Strategic Trade Authorization-1 (STA-1) status (2018),<\/strong> easing high-tech exports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India has signed all four major foundational agreements with the U.S.:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General Security Of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) in 2002 and the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (LEMOA) in 2016.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>COMCASA (2018) \u2013 Secure communications &amp; interoperability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement for Geo-spatial Cooperation (BECA 2020) for Geo-spatial intelligence &amp; satellite data for precision targeting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Military Exercises: <\/strong>Among India\u2019s most extensive set of exercises with any country.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Yudh Abhyas: Land forces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Malabar: Naval quadrilateral with US, India, Japan, Australia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cope India: Air exercise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tiger Triumph: Tri-service HADR exercise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vajra Prahar: Special forces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges in India-US Defense Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India\u2019s Strategic Autonomy:<\/strong> India seeks to maintain its non-aligned stance, balancing relations with the US while continuing defense ties with Russia and France.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unpredictability in US Policy:<\/strong> The transactional nature of US foreign policy, influenced by changing administrations, adds an element of unpredictability.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India must ensure that its defence strategy is not overly reliant on a single partner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology Transfer Restrictions:<\/strong> The US remains cautious in sharing sensitive defense technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indigenous Defence Capabilities:<\/strong> While the partnership has brought advanced technologies, it has not significantly boosted India&#8217;s indigenous defence manufacturing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CAATSA and Sanctions Concerns:<\/strong> India\u2019s purchase of Russian S-400 missile defense systems risks US sanctions under the CAATSA law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bureaucratic Hurdles<\/strong>: Complex procurement processes and policy mismatches slow down defense cooperation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diversification of Partnerships:<\/strong> India should continue to engage with multiple defence partners to avoid over-dependence on any single country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Focus on Self-Reliance:<\/strong> Initiatives like &#8216;Aatmanirbhar Bharat&#8217;
