{"id":83426,"date":"2026-08-29T18:16:46","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T12:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=83426"},"modified":"2026-08-29T18:17:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T12:47:23","slug":"india-kuwait-joint-defence-committee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/29-08-2026\/india-kuwait-joint-defence-committee","title":{"rendered":"India-Kuwait Joint Defence Committee (JDC)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The inaugural meeting of the<strong> India-Kuwait Joint Defence Committee (JDC) <\/strong>was held in New Delhi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries agreed to further <strong>strengthen the bilateral defence cooperation <\/strong>across a <strong>wide range of areas,<\/strong> including training, military exercises, military medicine, staff talks, defence industry, and Research and Development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The first meeting of the JDC marked an important step towards<strong> operationalising the objectives outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation <\/strong>signed in <strong>2024<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India and Kuwait Ties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diplomatic relations<\/strong> between the two countries were established in <strong>1961.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The relationship was upgraded to a<strong> Strategic Partnership <\/strong>in 2024.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The year <strong>2026-27 marked the 65th anniversary <\/strong>of establishment of diplomatic relations between two countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hydrocarbon sector:<\/strong> During FY 2025-26, Kuwait accounted for about<strong> 3.5 % of India&#8217;s total energy needs, <\/strong>ranking as India\u2019s 6th largest Crude supplier and 4th largest LPG source.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bilateral Trade: <\/strong>Total bilateral trade with Kuwait during FY 2025 -26 amounted to USD 9.57 billion, of which Indian Exports was USD 1.65 billion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manpower cooperation: <\/strong>Indians are the largest expatriate community in Kuwait (approximately 1 million), including in private and domestic sectors of Kuwait.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is an existing mechanism of a Joint Working Group (JWG) on Labour, Employment and Manpower Development to discuss these issues, which has been meeting regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Community: <\/strong>The Indian community with a strength of over 1 million is the largest expatriate community in Kuwait and is regarded as the community of first preference among the expatriate communities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of Kuwait for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diaspora &amp; Remittances: <\/strong>With over 1 million Indians, Kuwait hosts India\u2019s largest expatriate community there, contributing significantly to remittances and people-to-people ties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy: <\/strong>As one of India\u2019s top oil suppliers, Kuwait plays a crucial role in fueling India\u2019s energy needs. With India being the one of the largest importer of oil globally, ensuring a steady flow of energy from Kuwait is vital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Cooperation:<\/strong> The emerging defence partnership offers opportunities for joint training, maritime security, military medicine, defence industry and R&amp;D cooperation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Location:<\/strong> Kuwait\u2019s location in the Gulf region gives it strategic importance for India\u2019s maritime security, protection of sea lanes and wider engagement with West Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c1c4a0\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"849\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-255-1024x849.png\" alt=\"kuwait \" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-83427\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c1c4a0;
