{"id":82834,"date":"2026-08-24T19:03:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T13:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=82834"},"modified":"2026-08-24T19:04:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T13:34:07","slug":"regenerative-agriculture-resilient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/24-08-2026\/regenerative-agriculture-resilient","title":{"rendered":"Regenerative Agriculture For a Resilient India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Agriculture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regenerative Agriculture is supporting\u00a0 long-term agricultural production, environmental sustainability and farm profitability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India&#8217;s agriculture and allied industries have shown a <strong>decadal increase of 4.45% over FY16-FY25.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To support this expansion the <strong>ecological roots of farming must be restored.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intensive farming<\/strong> causes abuse of chemicals, poor soil health and irregular rainfall that lead to increasing cost of inputs, aggravating climate shocks and making small and marginal farmers more vulnerable.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>However, regenerative agriculture <\/strong>can help restore soil health, ecosystem services, boost climate resilience and minimise dependency on external inputs.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Regenerative agriculture&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a <strong>holistic strategy <\/strong>to farming that seeks to restore soil health and improve biodiversity.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its aim is to <strong>guarantee the long-term productivity and resilience of farming systems<\/strong>. This indicates low wasting of water and excellent water use efficiency.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Farm Mechanisation: <\/strong>It is the use of machines and equipment to ease and automate some farm operations in agriculture.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It helps to optimise the critical inputs like water, fuel and fertilisers thereby lowering waste and carbon footprint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Managing Nitrogen Fertiliser:<\/strong> The secret is to select the suitable fertiliser and to use it at the right time in the right amount.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Natural farming:<\/strong> An agricultural approach based on indigenous knowledge systems of India and free from chemicals.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The technique is based on utilisation of <strong>biological inputs<\/strong> like <strong>Beejamrut, Jeevamrut, GhanJeevamrut, Neemastra and Dashparni <\/strong>created from the inputs of native cattle.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integrated Farming System (IFS): <\/strong>It<strong> <\/strong>is a broad approach to farm production systems, in which more than one farm firm is integrated in a single system.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It encourages strategies like intercropping, crop rotation, multi-cropping and mixed farming that make the best use of resources.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agroforestry: <\/strong>It is the amalgamation of fruit and plantation crops with perennial tree systems to evolve a more sustainable and profitable farming method.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Climate-Resilient Agriculture (CRA): <\/strong>Refers to practices and technology that enhance the capacity of agricultural systems to cope with climate change-related stresses and shocks.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Benefits of Regenerative Farming<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Environmental Impacts<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Soil restoration: <\/strong>Regenerative approaches restore soil organic matter, soil structure and long term soil fertility resulting in sustained agricultural productivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improved biodiversity:\u00a0 <\/strong>Regenerative practices provide a higher diversity of pollinators, beneficial insects and soil microbes. And so the whole ecology is in sync.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Climate change mitigation<\/strong>: These technologies take more carbon out of the environment than they put in, effectively cancelling emissions from farming.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regenerative agriculture is highly aligned with SDG 13 (Climate Action).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water efficiency<\/strong> : Healthy soil holds more water, which means less run-off.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It also benefits aquatic systems by reducing erosion of soil and transporting sediments and toxins to streams and lakes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic and Social Outcomes<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Profitability<\/strong>: Healthier soils imply less synthetic fertilizer, pesticide and irrigation.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It reduces input costs, stabilises yields and increases farmers&#8217; net revenues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Job creation: <\/strong>\u00a0Regenerative agriculture creates new jobs in farming, advice services, technology and ecological management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More resilient: <\/strong>\u00a0Regenerative farms are more resilient to changes in climate and market conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Transition Lag and Temporary Yield Losses<\/strong>: Soils take 3 to 5 years to rebuild naturally occurring microbial activity; hence yields may decrease somewhat before rebounding and exceeding input costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High Upfront Capital:<\/strong> Specialised equipment such as no-till seed drills or rotational livestock fence requires a substantial initial outlay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Knowledge and Labour Deficit<\/strong>: The generic chemical schedules are not suited for the diversity of crops and rotational grazing needs, which require wide regional agronomic knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Policy and Certification Gaps:<\/strong> Many areas still sustain conventional chemical-intensive commercial crops and official regeneration certifications are in process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Targeted Interventions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Mission for Natural Farming: <\/strong>It was<strong> <\/strong>announced in 2024 develops an enabling support ecosystem to assist farmers to steadily shift to natural farming.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It gives an output based incentive of \u20b94,000 per acre each year for two years for a maximum of one acre per farmer.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It envisages establishment of 10,000 need-based Bio-input Resource Centers to ensure simple access for farmers to bio-inputs like Jeevamrit and Beejamrit.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), <\/strong>launched in 2015, has become a key pillar of India\u2019s organic agriculture movement.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More Crop Per Drop : <\/strong>The country has been implementing Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) since 2015-16.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0It promotes the increase in the efficiency of the use of water in fields through micro-irrigation systems, especially drip and spray irrigation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rainfed Area Development Project (RADP):\u00a0 <\/strong>It has been implemented through area based cluster technique for support of Integrated Farming System (IFS) since 2014-15.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It involves a more robust use of existing methodologies and a greater engagement with the community.
