It is expected to be <strong>$40\u201345 billion by 2030.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Indian Space Policy 2023 <\/strong>led to the entry of private players to space-related activities in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies such as<strong> Pixxel, Dhruva Space, Skyroot Aerospace, Agnikul Cosmos, and Bellatrix Aerospace<\/strong> have emerged as <strong>pioneers of a new space era.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d4e4f1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d4e4f1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"248\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-211.png\" alt=\"indias private space ecosystem\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-82829\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Skyroot Aerospace became <strong>India&#8217;s first space-tech unicorn.<\/strong> Its <strong>Vikram-1<\/strong> became the <strong>first privately developed Indian orbital-class rocket<\/strong> to successfully place a payload into <strong>Low Earth Orbit (LEO).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pixxel Space<\/strong> is building<strong> hyperspectral imaging satellites<\/strong> that provide Earth observation data to commercial customers and government agencies in India, Europe and the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Reforms in the Space Sector of India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Establishment of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre, 2020): <\/strong>Acts as a <strong>single-window regulator<\/strong> and facilitator for private companies, authorising and promoting their participation in space activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corporatisation via NewSpace India Limited (2019):<\/strong> It was set up as ISRO\u2019s commercial arm to transfer technology, manufacture satellites\/launch vehicles through industry, and provide commercial satellite services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Schemes to encourage the private sector have been implemented by IN-SPACe:\u00a0 <\/strong>Seed Fund Scheme, Pricing Support Policy, Mentorship Support, Design Lab for NGEs, Skill Development in Space Sector, ISRO facility utilisation support and technology transfer to non-governmental entities (NGEs).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The \u20b91,000 crore Venture Capital (VC) Fund under IN-SPACe <\/strong>aims to accelerate private participation in the space sector.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IN-SPACe also introduced the <strong>\u20b9500 crore Technology Adoption Fund (TAF).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Liberalised FDI Policy for Space:<\/strong> The revised policy permits up to <strong>74% automatic FDI<\/strong> in satellite manufacturing and operations, <strong>49% automatic FDI<\/strong> in launch vehicles and spaceports, and <strong>100% automatic FDI <\/strong>in the manufacturing of satellite components and subsystems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SpaceTech Innovation Network (SpIN)<\/strong>: SpIN is a one-of-its-kind public-private collaboration for start-ups and SMEs in the space industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b2d9ef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"549\" height=\"382\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-212.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-82830\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b2d9ef; aspect-ratio:1.4372494477624151;width:506px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-212.png 549w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-212-300x209.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of the Privatisation of the Space Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Private companies operate with a profit motive, which drives them to <strong>reduced costs<\/strong> in space missions and satellite launches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Privatisation introduces <strong>competition into the space industry<\/strong>, which can drive both efficiency and innovation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private players facilitate the <strong>commercialisation of space applications<\/strong> and services in agriculture, disaster management, urban planning, navigation, and communication, as well as in other sectors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Private companies have a <strong>greater degree of autonomy <\/strong>in making decisions, which enables them to take up new projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It helps to <strong>generate employment,<\/strong> enable modern technology absorption and make the sector self-reliant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Space technology is expensive and needs heavy investment. This kind of lucrative power is available only to selected rich corporates, which can lead to <strong>monopolisation of the sector.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building and operating space technology and infrastructure <strong>requires specialised technical expertise<\/strong> and resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protecting intellectual property rights (IPR)<\/strong> is crucial for incentivising innovation and investment in the space sector.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Indian private companies in the space sector have to face stiff <strong>competition from the established players<\/strong> such as <strong>SpaceX, Blue Origin<\/strong>, etc. in the international market.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Private entities are now actively involved in crucial aspects of research, manufacturing, and fabrication of rockets and satellites, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of innovation.
