{"id":82823,"date":"2026-08-24T18:41:45","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T13:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=82823"},"modified":"2026-08-24T18:45:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T13:15:45","slug":"ai-designed-bacteriophages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/24-08-2026\/ai-designed-bacteriophages","title":{"rendered":"AI Designed Bacteriophages"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Science and Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute used<strong> artificial intelligence (AI) to design complete genomes of bacteriophages<\/strong> &#8211;<strong> viruses that infect bacteria.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bacteriophages<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bacteriophages (phages)<\/strong> are <strong>viruses<\/strong> that <strong>selectively target and kill bacteria.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are the <strong>most abundant commonly occurring natural entities,<\/strong> playing crucial roles in <strong>regulating bacterial populations<\/strong> and influencing <strong>microbial ecosystems.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phages are useful as <strong>they can destroy bacteria resistant to drugs<\/strong> such as antibiotics.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Phages infect their bacterial hosts with great specificity. <strong>They do not infect human cells.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)<\/strong> poses a serious global threat to our ability to treat bacterial infections, this has led to an interest in <strong>an older approach to treating microbial infections by using phages.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phage therapy<\/strong> can be a promising tool for controlling AMR, which is one of the top global public health and development threats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI Designed Phage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>An AI-designed phage<\/strong> successfully combined a viral protein with other genetic changes in a way that conventional engineering had struggled to achieve.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some were able to <strong>overcome bacterial resistance<\/strong> that <strong>defeated the original virus,<\/strong> for medicine, that creates remarkable opportunities.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The significance is not simply that AI can propose individual mutations; it can <strong>explore combinations that would be extremely difficult for humans to test one by one.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Applications<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phage Therapy: <\/strong>Antibiotic resistance is steadily eroding conventional treatment options, while bacteriophages offer another way of killing bacteria.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assistive Role:<\/strong> AI can assist the design of vaccine antigens, antibodies, therapeutic proteins and viral vectors used to deliver genetic treatments.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cancer Therapy:<\/strong> It may eventually help optimize oncolytic viruses that selectively attack cancer cells.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Virus?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A virus is an <strong>infectious microbe<\/strong> consisting of a segment of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a <strong>protein coat called capsid.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Viruses are <strong>not considered living organisms<\/strong> because they cannot carry out metabolic processes on their own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A virus cannot replicate alone; instead, it must infect cells and use components of the host cell to make copies of itself.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often, a <strong>virus ends up killing the host cell<\/strong> in the process, causing damage to the host organism.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Well-known examples of <strong>viruses causing human disease<\/strong> include AIDS, COVID-19, measles and smallpox.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Genome<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The genome is the <strong>entire set of DNA instructions found in a cell.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In humans, the genome consists of<strong> 23 pairs of chromosomes <\/strong>located in the cell\u2019s nucleus, as well as a small chromosome in the cell\u2019s mitochondria.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A genome contains<strong> all the information needed for an individual to develop and function.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e8ecec\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-210-1024x577.png\" alt=\"genome\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-82824\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e8ecec;
