{"id":82295,"date":"2026-08-22T17:35:39","date_gmt":"2026-08-22T12:05:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=82295"},"modified":"2026-08-22T17:39:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-22T12:09:05","slug":"india-brazil-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/22-08-2026\/india-brazil-relations","title":{"rendered":"India-Brazil Relations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India and Brazil reaffirmed their commitment to <strong>deepening bilateral cooperation in telecommunications and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India- Brazil Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diplomatic Relations:<\/strong> Relations were established in <strong>1948<\/strong>, and the two countries have been <strong>Strategic Partners since 2006.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both sides also have several <strong>Joint Working Groups<\/strong> to take forward sectoral cooperation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade Relations:<\/strong> Brazil is currently <strong>India\u2019s largest trade partner<\/strong> in South America.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two-way trade was <strong>worth $12.2 billion in 2024-25,<\/strong> with Indian exports amounting to<strong> $6.77 billion<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both Nations have established <strong>Trade Monitoring Mechanism<\/strong> as an institutional mechanism to monitor and identify bottlenecks in bilateral trade and take appropriate measures to address them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence &amp; Security Cooperation:<\/strong> India and Brazil signed an agreement in 2003 for cooperation in defence. Meetings of the Joint Defence Committee (JDC) are held as an institutionalized mechanism for defence cooperation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Security Cooperation:<\/strong> Established a Strategic Dialogue mechanism in 2006 to cover regional and global issues of mutual concern.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The two countries have an Extradition Treaty, Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in Criminal Matters and an Agreement of Transfer of Sentenced Persons in place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space Cooperation: <\/strong>Both signed a framework agreement for peaceful use of outer space in 2004 as well an Agreement for inter-institutional cooperation between the space agencies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries have been collaborating in Data sharing and satellite tracking of Indian satellites.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multiflora Relations:<\/strong> India and Brazil share a very close and multifaceted relationship both at bilateral level as well as in plurilateral fora such as BRICS, BASIC, G-20, G-4, India, Brazil, and South Africa (IBSA) Dialogue Forum, International Solar Alliance, as well as in the larger multilateral bodies such as the UN, WTO, UNESCO, and WIPO.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Relevance of India\u2013Brazil Cooperation in a Changing World<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UNSC Reform:<\/strong> India and Brazil advocate expansion in both permanent and non-permanent categories, reflecting the aspirations of underrepresented regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global South Voice: <\/strong>Both champion reforms in international institutions (UN, IMF, World Bank) to reflect contemporary realities and the needs of developing countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bioenergy and Global Biofuels Alliance:<\/strong> India and Brazil, as founding members, have scalable biofuel alternatives to mitigate climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TFFF (Tropical Forests Forever Fund) COP30:<\/strong> India backs Brazil\u2019s climate leadership at COP30, emphasises forest conservation, climate financing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bilateral Investment and Trade Mechanism<\/strong>: In line with the growing global trade dynamics, addressing trade barriers, simplifying visa procedures and encouraging local currency funding are important.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pharma and Health Security: <\/strong>\u00a0Joint R&amp;D in vaccines and tropical diseases contributes to the enhancement of health sovereignty in the Global South.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Food Security: <\/strong>India &amp; Brazil, significant food producers, jointly urge for ending hunger by 2030 through multilateral efforts like Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, highlighting the Global Leadership on Food Security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joint STI Innovation<\/strong>: Collaborative R&amp;D in AI, quantum tech and renewables fosters technological self-reliance and inclusive innovation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges in the Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Geopolitical competition <\/strong>: Both India and Brazil are emerging countries, seeking a greater position on the global stage.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>And sometimes it can create competitiveness. particularly in international bodies like as the UN, where both countries strive to increase their participation and influence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade Barriers<\/strong>: India and Brazil have huge trade potential but have not been able to attain its full potential due to many trade barriers and protectionist moves in both the countries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Such prohibitions are a hindrance to the development of bilateral trade and investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure and connectivity<\/strong>: There is still scope for developing infrastructure and connectivity between the two countries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Better air and maritime connectivity and transit linkages are needed to promote business and people-to-people contacts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional Priorities and Strategic Autonomy: <\/strong>Brazil\u2019s priorities include integration in Latin America and alliances in the Western Hemisphere.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regional strategic objectives are less congruent, with India\u2019s focus being on its near neighbourhood and Indo-Pacific.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Geopolitical Pressures &amp;
