{"id":82001,"date":"2026-08-20T19:04:44","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T13:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=82001"},"modified":"2026-08-20T19:05:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T13:35:01","slug":"india-coconut-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/20-08-2026\/india-coconut-sector","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Coconut Sector"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s coconut sector, deeply rooted in the country\u2019s agricultural economy and cultural traditions, is steadily evolving from a predominantly traditional farming activity into a diversified, export-oriented industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About Coconut&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is often described as the<strong> \u201cKalpavriksha\u201d or \u201cTree of Life\u201d<\/strong> because almost every part of the plant has economic or practical uses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Type of Plant:<\/strong> Coconut is a perennial plantation crop and a <strong>monocotyledonous palm<\/strong> belonging to the family <strong>Arecaceae.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coconut is native to the <strong>Indo-Pacific region<\/strong>, with its origin commonly traced to <strong>Southeast Asia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Climatic Requirements: <\/strong>Coconut requires a warm and humid tropical climate for optimal growth. It grows best in regions with temperatures ranging between<strong> 25\u00b0C and 30\u00b0C<\/strong> and requires high and evenly distributed rainfall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soil Requirements:<\/strong> Coconut thrives in <strong>well-drained sandy loam, alluvial, laterite, <\/strong>and coastal soils.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Economic and Livelihood Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India holds a prominent place in the global coconut economy. The country ranks <strong>first in production<\/strong> and<strong> third in cultivation area<\/strong>, accounting for 31.24 percent and 17.90 percent of global totals, respectively.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bbced5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bbced5;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"405\" height=\"325\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-170.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-82003\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-170.png 405w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-170-300x241.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The coconut sector supports the livelihoods of <strong>nearly 30 million people in India, including around 10 million farmers<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Export Potential:<\/strong> India\u2019s coconut product exports reached \u20b97,038.35 crore in 2025-26, registering a 62% increase over the previous year.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c6d6e3\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c6d6e3;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"396\" height=\"271\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-169.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-82002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-169.png 396w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-169-300x205.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 396px) 100vw, 396px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MSP for Copra: <\/strong>Copra, the dried kernel of coconut, is among the 22 mandated agricultural crops covered under the Minimum Support Price regime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coconut Promotion Scheme: <\/strong>In order to address pest outbreaks, root wilt disease, and aging plantations, the Coconut Promotion Scheme was announced in the Union Budget 2026-27. The scheme seeks to enhance coconut production and productivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coconut Development Board (CDB): <\/strong>Established in <strong>1981<\/strong> under the <strong>M<\/strong>inistry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the CDB provides institutional support for the integrated development of coconut cultivation and the coconut industry. It operates across 22 States and Union Territories.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other schemes supporting the production of quality planting material include:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Establishment of Nucleus Coconut Seed Garden: <\/strong>Supports the establishment of coconut seed gardens to produce high-quality coconut seedlings and improved varieties.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Establishment of Small Coconut Nursery:<\/strong> Promotes production of quality coconut seedlings through the establishment of public and private nurseries.
