{"id":81853,"date":"2026-08-18T18:21:34","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T12:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=81853"},"modified":"2026-08-18T18:22:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T12:52:32","slug":"digital-infrastructure-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/18-08-2026\/digital-infrastructure-in-india","title":{"rendered":"Digital Infrastructure in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Infrastructure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India&#8217;s governance has undergone a fundamental transformation through <strong>Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Digital Economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Digital Economy<\/strong> now contributes about<strong> 12\u201314%<\/strong> of India&#8217;s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is projected to account for<strong> 20% over the next decade.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As per the State of India\u2019s Digital Economy Report 2026, India is now the world\u2019s <strong>fifth-largest digitalised economy<\/strong> and the <strong>fourth-highest ranked G20 economy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key Milestones in India\u2019s Digital Self-Reliance Landscape<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a4b9cc\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"469\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-148.png\" alt=\"digital infrastructure in india\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-81854\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a4b9cc; aspect-ratio:1.4520342508828794;width:469px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-148.png 469w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-148-300x207.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 469px) 100vw, 469px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Third-largest Export Sector: <\/strong>Electronic goods have now become India&#8217;s third-largest export category.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Employment and Women Participation:<\/strong> Electronic manufacturing ecosystem supports nearly 25 lakh jobs, with women accounting for nearly <strong>30% of the workforce.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Mobile Manufacturing Hub:<\/strong> India is now the <strong>world&#8217;s 2nd largest mobile phone manufacturer.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The United Nations defines Digital Public Infrastructure as <strong>a set of foundational digital systems<\/strong> that form the <strong>backbone of modern societies.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These systems enable secure and seamless interaction between people, businesses and governments.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For digital infrastructure to deliver public value, it must be <strong>inclusive, interoperable and governed in the public interest.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When linked with payments and data exchange frameworks, it creates a<strong> unified architectur<\/strong>e that strengthens state capacity and widens opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Foundations of India\u2019s DPI: The JAM Trinity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jan Dhan bank accounts, Aadhaar enrolment and widespread mobile phone <\/strong>penetration created the base layer for India\u2019s digital transformation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jan Dhan Yojana (2014): <\/strong>It was launched as the National Mission for Financial Inclusion, set out to give every unbanked adult in India a bank account.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It led to a widened financial participation where savings entered the formal system strengthening economic agency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aadhaar:<\/strong> It enabled unique identification and secure authentication for efficient service delivery. Access to services became more reliable and transparent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Affordable Mobile Data: <\/strong>Wireless data cost dropped drastically making digital services more affordable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mobile Phones and Connectivity: <\/strong>Fifth generation (5G) mobile services are now available in 99.9% of districts, covering 85% of the population.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This extensive digital reach ensured that identity and banking were not confined to urban centres.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"91ceee\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fragmented Federal Coordination: <\/strong>Implementation of DPI often requires coordination between the Union Government, States, local bodies, and private stakeholders.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Variations in digital readiness and administrative capacity across states create uneven implementation and service delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dependence on Private Technology Ecosystem: <\/strong>Although DPI is publicly driven, many services depend heavily on private fintech firms which may create systemic vulnerabilities and reduce strategic autonomy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Language and Accessibility Barriers: <\/strong>Many digital platforms are still not fully accessible in regional languages or for persons with disabilities.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trust Deficit Among Citizens: <\/strong>Concerns regarding misuse of personal data, digital fraud, surveillance, and online scams reduce public trust in digital systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weak Grievance Redressal Mechanisms: <\/strong>Delayed grievance resolution reduces the effectiveness and credibility of DPI systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cross-Border Data and Sovereignty Concerns: <\/strong>With increasing global integration of digital platforms and cloud infrastructure, concerns arise regarding data localization, cross-border data flows, and protection of national digital sovereignty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental and Energy Costs:<\/strong> Large-scale digital infrastructure, data centers, telecom networks, and cloud computing systems consume significant energy and contribute to environmental stress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Unified Payments Interface (UPI): <\/strong>It enables instant, interoperable and secure transactions between individuals and merchants in real time.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The International Monetary Fund, in its 2025 report on growing retail digital payments, r<strong>ecognised UPI as the world\u2019s largest retail fast payment system by transaction volume.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UPI accounted for<strong> 85% of India&#8217;s digital payment transactions<\/strong> by volume in FY 2025\u201326.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b8c7cf\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b8c7cf;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"363\" height=\"287\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Public Financial Management System (PFMS): <\/strong>It is a web based online transaction system that enables end to end monitoring of government funds and electronic payments to implementing agencies and beneficiaries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This reform helped <strong>remove duplicate and fake beneficiaries<\/strong> and <strong>reduce leakages.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC):<\/strong> Launched in 2022, ONDC is an open network designed to<strong> democratise digital commerce <\/strong>by connecting buyers and sellers through interoperable platforms rather than a single marketplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DigiLocker:<\/strong> Launched in 2015, DigiLocker introduced a <strong>secure digital document wallet for citizens.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It allows individuals to store, access and share authenticated electronic documents with consent-based access.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UMANG:<\/strong> Launched in 2017, UMANG, or the Unified Mobile Application for New age Governance, was designed to advance mobile governance in India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It provides a single window mobile and web platform to access services from central, state and local government bodies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IndiaAI Mission: <\/strong>It is strengthening AI education, infrastructure and responsible AI adoption.
