{"id":81789,"date":"2026-08-17T18:25:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T12:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=81789"},"modified":"2026-08-17T18:26:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T12:56:08","slug":"coastal-erosion-in-odisha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/17-08-2026\/coastal-erosion-in-odisha","title":{"rendered":"Coastal Erosion in Odisha"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Environment\/DM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways said that about <strong>28% of Odisha\u2019s 564-km coastline is undergoing erosion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is based on a<strong> study by the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), <\/strong>which carried out a comprehensive assessment and mapping of shoreline change analysis along the Odisha coast for the period 1990-2022.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The NCCR monitors long-term shoreline changes across the Indian coastline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Approximately<strong> 28.3% <\/strong>of the coastline is undergoing erosion, <strong>17.6%<\/strong> remains stable, and<strong> 54.1%<\/strong> is experiencing accretion or growth.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coastal Erosion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coastal erosion is the process by which local sea level rise, strong wave action, and coastal flooding <strong>wear down or carry away rocks, soils, and\/or sands along the coast.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The National Centre for Coastal Research, (NCCR) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences has monitored the shoreline changes for the entire Indian coastline for <strong>the period 1990-2018.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is observed that <strong>33.6% of the Indian coastline<\/strong> was vulnerable to erosion, <strong>26.9% was under accretion (growing)<\/strong> and<strong> 39.6% was in stable state.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impact: <\/strong>The erosion poses severe threats to livelihoods, particularly for fishing communities dependent on coastal stability.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Infrastructure such as roads, housing and ports faces significant damage, while biodiversity hotspots, including estuaries and mangroves, are at risk of collapse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Factors Responsible:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rising Sea Levels: <\/strong>Driven by climate change, higher sea levels amplify storm surges and coastal flooding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sand mining and Infrastructure Projects:<\/strong> Unregulated sand extraction and construction of ports, seawalls, and breakwaters disrupt sediment flow, accelerating erosion in vulnerable areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mangrove Depletion:<\/strong> The loss of natural barriers like mangroves leaves the coastline exposed to wave action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Steps Taken by Government to&nbsp; in Combating Sea Erosion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Ministry of Environment, Forest &amp; Climate Change has <strong>delineated the hazard line for the entire coast of the country.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The hazard line is<strong> indicative of the shoreline changes,<\/strong> including sea level rise due to climate change.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This line is to be <strong>used by agencies in Coastal States as a tool for Disaster Management <\/strong>including planning of adaptive and mitigation measures.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MoEFCC has notified <strong>Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2019<\/strong> with a view to conserve and protect coastal stretches, marine areas and to ensure livelihood security to the fisher and other local communities.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MoEFCC has framed a <strong>national strategy for coastal protection <\/strong>along with guidelines for all Coastal States and Union Territories.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Flood Management Scheme<\/strong> of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, including anti-sea erosion schemes, are planned and executed by the State Governments with their own resources as per priorities of States.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A new component &#8220;<strong>Coastal Management Information System (CMIS)<\/strong>&#8221;
