It can be recharged from an external power source.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are <strong>four types of EVs:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Battery EVs (BEVs):<\/strong> These are fully electric.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hybrid EVs (HEVs) &amp; Plug-in HEVs (PHEVs):<\/strong> These combine an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to power the vehicle.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PHEVs additionally have externally rechargeable battery packs for extended electric-only operation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel Cell EVs (FCEV):<\/strong> Electric energy is produced from chemical energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Are Electric Vehicles the Smart Choice?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cut Costs: <\/strong>Lower fuel expenses and minimal maintenance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eco-Friendly:<\/strong> Zero tailpipe emissions and a smaller carbon footprint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tax Perks<\/strong>: Savings with lower registration fees &amp; Government incentives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Effortless Drive:<\/strong> No gears or clutch-only acceleration &amp; braking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Home Charging:<\/strong> Integrated home\/public station charging solutions available.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Silent Ride:<\/strong> An electric vehicle, by its very nature, doesn&#8217;t have an engine. Instead, it has a motor system powered by a battery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Last Decade of India\u2019s EV Revolution<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s journey towards electric mobility<strong> began in 2015 <\/strong>marked by the launch of the <strong>National Electric Mobility Mission Plan<\/strong> and <strong>FAME Scheme<\/strong> to incentivize the adoption of EVs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was driven by clear strategic priorities like reducing the rising import bill on petroleum fuels and tackling worsening urban air pollution.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It aimed to <strong>lower greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong> from the transport sector, which accounts for ~9% of India\u2019s total emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>EV Adoption in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It has seen a multifold surge, growing <strong>from 0.08% in FY15-16 to 8.26% in FY25-26.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was driven by motorised <strong>two-wheelers (12.8 lakh units)<\/strong> and <strong>three-wheelers (8 lakh units)<\/strong> sold in 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"cee3ef\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #cee3ef;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-44.png\" alt=\"ev adoption in india\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-80883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-44.png 552w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-44-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 552px) 100vw, 552px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Exports <\/strong>have risen from USD 1.2 million in 2020 to USD 84 million in 2024. Top <strong>export destinations<\/strong> included <strong>Nepal, Indonesia and Japan.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2025, <strong>Uttar Pradesh<\/strong> emerged as the largest EV market with more than 4 lakh units, representing 18% of national EV sales.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was <strong>followed by Maharashtra<\/strong> with 2.66 lakh units (12%) &amp; <strong>Karnataka<\/strong> with 2 lakh units (9% of total sales).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expanding Infrastructure<\/strong>: According to <strong>Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)<\/strong>, 16,561 of the 52,718 public charging stations available as of July 2026 are equipped with fast EV charging facilities.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>e-Amrit tool<\/strong> helps locate charging stations based on one\u2019s location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Future Prospects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s EV market, valued at <strong>USD 3.71 billion in 2025, <\/strong>is projected to grow to <strong>USD 191.04 billion by 2034,<\/strong> at a CAGR of 54.94%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India aims for 30% of all vehicle sales to be electric by 2030<\/strong>, aligning with the global <strong>EV30@30 initiative.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The EV ecosystem is strengthened with the establishment of <strong>1.32 million charging stations <\/strong>across India by 2030.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"c8e0e8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"555\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-45.png\" alt=\"future prospects\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-80884\" style=\"--dominant-color: #c8e0e8; width:535px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-45.png 555w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-45-300x159.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Concerns Over Electric Vehicles (EVs) in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High Initial Cost: <\/strong>EVs are still costlier than conventional petrol\/diesel vehicles. Batteries account for <strong>35\u201340% of the total vehicle cost<\/strong>, making EVs expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Charging Infrastructure Gap: <\/strong>Limited availability of public charging stations, especially in rural and remote areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Range Anxiety: <\/strong>Many consumers worry that EVs may not have enough battery range for long-distance travel. Lack of charging stations reinforces this concern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Battery Life and Replacement Cost: <\/strong>Concerns about battery degradation over time. Battery replacement is expensive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dependence on Critical Minerals: <\/strong>India depends on imports of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other critical minerals.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Supply chain disruptions can increase battery costs and affect manufacturing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Domestic Manufacturing Challenges: <\/strong>India is still building indigenous battery and component manufacturing capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electricity Demand: <\/strong>Large-scale EV adoption will increase electricity demand.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Requires strengthening of the power grid and promotion of renewable energy integration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental Concerns: <\/strong>EVs have zero tailpipe emissions but battery manufacturing and disposal pose environmental challenges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Battery Recycling and Disposal: <\/strong>Safe recycling infrastructure is still developing. Improper disposal may create environmental and health hazards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consumer Awareness and Misconceptions: <\/strong>Many consumers believe EVs have very limited range, unsafe, difficult to maintain and cannot perform in Indian conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financing and Insurance: <\/strong>Higher upfront cost affects affordability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Policy and Regulatory Challenges: <\/strong>Long-term policy stability is needed to encourage investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strategic Policy Interventions for India\u2019s EVs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP 2020): <\/strong>It outlines a strategic roadmap to accelerate the adoption and domestic manufacturing of EVs in India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It has the twin objective of strengthening energy security and promoting clean,sustainable mobility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FAME India: <\/strong>It was launched in 2015 to drive EV adoption under the NEMMP 2020 framework.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It offers incentives to buyers, supports creation of charging infrastructure, and manufacturing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phase I continued until March 2019, followed by Phase II, implemented over five years until April 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Mission on Manufacturing (NMM<\/strong>): It identifies EVs as a key <strong>\u2018seed\u2019 sector for innovation-led growth<\/strong>. It has ambitious targets for 2035. It aims <strong>to double the manufacturing sector\u2019s contribution <\/strong>to GDP from<strong> 12.9% (2023) to 25% by 2035.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It strengthens India\u2019s EV ecosystem by promoting advanced manufacturing, fostering technology development, and integrating EV production into global value chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) by NITI Aayog: <\/strong>It is a first-of-its-kind framework. It tracks and compares the progress of States and Union Territories in advancing electric mobility.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It evaluates performance across 16 indicators across three pillars-<strong>transport electrification, charging infrastructure readiness, and EV research &amp; innovation<\/strong>. This offers a clear snapshot of each region\u2019s ecosystem strength.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Based on scores, regions are classified as <strong>Frontrunners<\/strong> (leading with robust ecosystems)<strong>, performers <\/strong>(making progress)<strong> <\/strong>and <strong>aspirants <\/strong>(requiring intervention).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PM E-DRIVE Scheme, 2014: <\/strong>It is a key initiative of the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI). It aims to accelerate EV adoption through <strong>targeted demand incentives, support for domestic manufacturing, and expansion of charging infrastructure.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) Scheme, 2024:<\/strong> It provides <strong>payment security coverage to each bus deployed for up to 12 years<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A total of <strong>10,000 electric buses <\/strong>are to be deployed via the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI), 2024:<\/strong> It <strong>promotes electric car manufacturing. It mandates a minimum investment<\/strong> of \u20b94,150 crore.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They need to achieve at least 25% Domestic Value Addition (DVA) by year three and 50% by year five.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PLI-Auto Scheme<\/strong>: It aims to strengthen India\u2019s manufacturing capabilities in Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT), including EVs.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It provides financial incentives to promote domestic manufacturing with a minimum 50% domestic value addition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PLI For Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage: <\/strong>It aims to promote domestic battery manufacturing.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It intends to <strong>establish a cumulative ACC capacity of 50 GWh in India. <\/strong>It supports development of advanced, long-range EV batteries through incentives linked to sales.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low GST on EVs<\/strong>: EVs in India attract a <strong>concessional GST rate of 5%<\/strong>, which applies to all electric cars, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Driving Forward: India\u2019s EV Growth Outlook<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is developing the next phases of <strong>Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) <\/strong>norms, <strong>CAFE III (2027\u20132032)<\/strong> and <strong>CAFE IV (2033\u20132037)<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These propose <strong>stricter CO\u2082 emission targets<\/strong> based on the <strong>Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has entered a decisive phase of scale with demand and production incentives, localization policies, early charging infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is reshaping itself from an import-dependent market into a globally competitive hub for EV production.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is aligned with its strategic priorities of energy security, reduced oil imports, and achieving the <strong>2070 net-zero vision<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressNoteDetails.aspx?NoteId=159436&amp;ModuleId=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source: PIB<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\"> The eMobility is turning into a key driver of economic growth, energy security, and a cleaner future, as India is rapidly shifting to electric vehicles (EVs). <\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong> What is an Electric Vehicle (EV)? <\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\"> An EV is a vehicle powered by an electric motor that uses energy stored in a battery.
