Nuclear families are generally devoid of informal networks for caring support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rising Female Workforce Participation: <\/strong>More women entering the workforce has increased the demand for organised childcare and caregiving services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives Related to the Care Economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SHATAYU (Senior Holistic Care Assistance and Training for Your Utility) Dashboard:<\/strong> A Dashboard, developed to support and strengthen caregiving services for senior citizens across the country, was also launched during the National Workshop on \u201cCreating a Well-Functioning Care Economy\u201d in 2026.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>JEEVAN (Joint Elderly Empowerment &amp; Virtual Assistance Network) Application:<\/strong> It is an accessible, citizen-facing mobile application engineered to serve as a single-window support ecosystem for senior citizens.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The app consolidates information on government welfare schemes, senior citizen homes, and support services.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vayo Manasa Sanjeevani:<\/strong> It is an initiative to spread awareness and provide online education to promote mental health support among elderly persons and support healthy ageing.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives Taken by the State Government<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Geriatric Caregiver Training Programme: The Government of Odisha<\/strong> runs a 3-month certificate course, which provides training for extending physical and mental health support to elderly persons.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monthly Allowance for Unpaid Caregivers: Karnataka<\/strong> became the first state in India to introduce a scheme titled <strong>\u201cCarer\u2019s monthly allowance scheme\u201d<\/strong> which provides a monthly allowance of<strong> Rs. 1,000<\/strong> to parents of individuals with severe disabilities such as Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson\u2019s disease, and multiple sclerosis.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges in Implementing Care Economy Reforms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fiscal Constraints:<\/strong> The expansion of the care infrastructure and staff training will require significant public investment and a long-term commitment to funding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social Attitudes to Care Work: <\/strong>Care work is still perceived as a private family responsibility and not a public policy issue. <strong>Societal patriarchal traditions<\/strong> that are highly ingrained curtail the acknowledgement of unpaid caring work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weak Regulatory Capacity: <\/strong>Ensuring quality standards and monitoring care institutions across India is an administrative challenge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of Skilled Care Workforce:<\/strong> India does not have a properly trained care workforce, particularly in the areas of eldercare, disability care and early children care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Establish a <strong>National Caregiving Policy<\/strong> with adequate legal structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establish the National Carer Council as the highest regulating body.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scale up carer training initiatives across the country through public-private partnerships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integrate caring with health, social protection and skills development programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niti.gov.in\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-08\/Reimagining-Care-Strategies-for-Empowering-Caregivers-in-Viksit-Bharat-2047.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NITI AAYOG<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong> Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\"> NITI Aayog, in its report &#8220;Reimagining Care: Strategies for Empowering Caregivers in Viksit Bharat @2047,&#8221; has advocated the setting up of a National Carer Council (NCC) to regulate, standardise and professionalise the caregiving services in India. <\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong> What is the Care Economy?
