{"id":80706,"date":"2026-08-04T18:21:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T12:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=80706"},"modified":"2026-08-04T18:21:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T12:51:47","slug":"e-pratyaropan-portal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/04-08-2026\/e-pratyaropan-portal","title":{"rendered":"NOTTO Launches e-Pratyaropan Portal for Organ Transplantation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has launched the e-Pratyaropan Portal along with the NOTTO mobile application to create a unified digital ecosystem for organ donation and transplantation in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the e-Pratyaropan Portal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unlike the previous system, where hospitals largely maintained their own transplant databases, the new e-Pratyaropan portal creates a common digital platform connecting hospitals, state authorities and Notto.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients will continue to register for transplants through a hospital of their choice. Hospitals, state governments and Notto will have secure access to the portal, where transplant centres can upload recipient details directly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Based on the information uploaded, the portal automatically creates waiting lists at the hospital, state, regional and national levels, enabling organs to be matched and allocated in real time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The platform also records every stage of organ allocation and movement, replacing much of the manual coordination that previously relied on phone calls and messaging between transplant coordinators.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hospitals and state authorities can also raise &#8220;super urgent&#8221; requests through the portal for critically ill patients requiring immediate transplantation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Organ Transplantation in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organ transplantation is a surgical procedure in which an organ, tissue or group of cells is removed from one person and transplanted into another.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A single deceased donor can save <strong>up to eight lives<\/strong> by donating the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both <strong>living and deceased persons<\/strong> can donate organs, subject to prescribed medical and legal conditions.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India ranks <strong>third globally<\/strong> in the number of organ transplants, after the <strong>United States<\/strong> and <strong>China<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"cbd1d5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"613\" height=\"319\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-22.png\" alt=\"organ transplantation in india\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-80707\" style=\"--dominant-color: #cbd1d5; aspect-ratio:1.9217693739590478;width:555px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-22.png 613w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/08\/image-22-300x156.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 613px) 100vw, 613px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a National level organization set up under the <strong>Directorate General of Health Services<\/strong>, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Functions: <\/strong>It develops policy guidelines, conducts training, monitors transplant activities, maintains a national databank, and coordinates inter-regional organ allocations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Laws and Rules Governing Organ Transplantation in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994:<\/strong> It is the primary legislation related to organ donation and transplantation in India and is aimed at <strong>regulation of removal, storage and transplantation<\/strong> of human organs for therapeutic purposes and for prevention of commercial dealings in human organs.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Makes Brainstem Death (BSD)<\/strong> a legal definition of death and lays down procedures for certification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transplantation of Human Organs (Amendment) Act, 2011: <\/strong>It allows swapping of organs and widens the donor pool by including grandparents and grandchildren in the list.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Rules (THOT), 2014: <\/strong>It has many provisions to remove the impediments to organ donation while curbing misuse\/misinterpretation of the rules.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP): <\/strong>The government offers financial support in upgrading infrastructure, hiring transplant coordinators, conducting the funeral of deceased donors, transportation and successful transplantation of organs, and undertaking the capacity building and training of healthcare workers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi (RAN): <\/strong>Provides financial assistance for organ transplantation to patients belonging to the <strong>Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jug Jug Jiyo Campaign: <\/strong>A year-long national campaign launched to honour organ donors and their families and promote organ donation across the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Facts Related to Organ Donation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>13th August<\/strong> is observed every year as <strong>World Organ Donation Day <\/strong>to raise awareness on Organ Donation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Organ Donation Day<\/strong> was celebrated every year on <strong>November 27<\/strong> but from 2023, the day is being celebrated on August 3 to commemorate the first successful deceased heart transplant in India on <strong>3rd August 1994<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NOTTO has declared<strong> July<\/strong> as the month of Organ donation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Demand-Supply Gap:<\/strong> More than one lakh patients require kidney transplants annually, while only around 15,000 transplants are performed.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low Deceased Organ Donation:<\/strong> Cultural beliefs, lack of awareness and limited consent continue to restrict deceased organ donation.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gender Gap:<\/strong> A British Medical Journal analysis found that between 2018\u20132023, women accounted for <strong>36,038<\/strong> of <strong>56,509<\/strong> living organ donations but were recipients in only <strong>17,041<\/strong> cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Concerns:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Deficiencies: <\/strong>Many government hospitals lack transplant ICUs, operation theatres, and HLA labs. ICU bed shortages hinder brain-dead donor maintenance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Human Resource Shortage:<\/strong> Scarcity of trained transplant surgeons, nephrologists, and coordinators. Frequent transfers disrupt continuity in transplant programs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial Barriers: <\/strong>High cost of lifelong immunosuppressants. Limited post-transplant support beyond the first year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data and Monitoring Gaps: <\/strong>Inconsistent reporting from hospitals.
