{"id":80498,"date":"2026-07-31T18:12:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T12:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=80498"},"modified":"2026-07-31T18:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T12:44:10","slug":"navic-navigation-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/31-07-2026\/navic-navigation-system","title":{"rendered":"ISRO&#8217;s NavIC System can no longer Provide Navigation Data Independently: Govt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Science and Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC)<\/strong> has<strong> lost its ability to deliver standalone navigation services<\/strong> after dropping below the critical threshold of operational spacecraft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The system currently has<strong> only three operational satellites<\/strong> providing Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its <strong>last atomic clock on the IRNSS-1F satellite<\/strong> failed in March 2026.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since<strong> at least four satellites are needed to independently calculate a user&#8217;s location,<\/strong> NavIC can no longer independently calculate a user&#8217;s location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The development has raised<strong> fresh concerns over the resilience of India\u2019s indigenous navigation network, <\/strong>which was built to reduce dependence on foreign systems for civilian and strategic applications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For most smartphone users, however, <strong>there will be no immediate disruption <\/strong>because devices typically rely on multiple global navigation systems, including GPS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NavIC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NavIC <\/strong>officially operationalised as the<strong> IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System),<\/strong> is India&#8217;s<strong> indigenous satellite navigation system<\/strong> developed <strong>by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is designed to provide<strong> accurate position, velocity, and timing (PNT) services<\/strong> to users in India and the surrounding region extending up to 1,500 km beyond the nation&#8217;s borders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Core specifications &amp; Capabilities:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Coverage Area: <\/strong>Entire Indian landmass and an area extending up to 1,500 km around the Indian boundary.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accuracy:<\/strong> Better than 10 meters for civilian users across the primary coverage area. Better than 5 meters within the core Indian landmass.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Service Types:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Standard Positioning Service (SPS):<\/strong> Open to all civilian users (integrated into modern consumer smartphones and vehicle tracking systems).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Restricted Service (RS): <\/strong>An encrypted signal reserved exclusively for authorized strategic users, such as the Indian Armed Forces and security agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NavIC SPS signals are i<strong>nteroperable <\/strong>with the other global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals namely GPS, Glonass, Galileo and BeiDou.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NavIC was originally designed as a constellation of seven satellites: <\/strong>three placed in geostationary orbit and four in inclined geosynchronous orbit, to ensure continuous coverage over India and nearby regions.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ISRO has launched <strong>11 satellites under the programme over the years, including replacements.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of NAvIC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NAvIC was developed to give India an<strong> independent navigation capability<\/strong> rather than relying entirely on foreign systems such as the US\u2019 GPS, Russia\u2019s GLONASS, Europe\u2019s Galileo or China\u2019s BeiDou.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The need for an indigenous system became evident <strong>after the 1999 Kargil conflict, <\/strong>when access to GPS data in the region was restricted,<strong> highlighting the strategic risks of depending on foreign navigation services.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NavIC is designed to support a <strong>wide range of civilian applications<\/strong>, including vehicle tracking, road, rail and maritime navigation, disaster management, surveying, mapping, location-based services and precise timing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Despite the operational shortfall, the<strong> government clarified that users face no security or operational vulnerabilities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Indian Armed Forces also utilize this<strong> hybrid GNSS framework <\/strong>to maintain <strong>operational capabilities without interruption.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISRO is now moving to <strong>rebuild the constellation and restore full independent service across India<\/strong> and regions extending roughly 1,500 kilometers beyond its borders.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The NVS-03 satellite is fully prepared for launch, while NVS-04 and NVS-05 are currently in advanced stages of
