a rainfall of 100 mm or more in one hour recorded in a station.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a severe weather event in which there is <strong>very heavy rain in a short period of time over a small area.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These cloudburst events are mostly associated with westward-moving cyclonic circulations in the middle troposphere (implying a cold-core in the lower troposphere).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The troposphere is the<strong> lower atmosphere<\/strong>, where almost <strong>all weather phenomena occur<\/strong> \u2014 stretching from the Earth\u2019s surface to 18-20 kilometres high at the equator, only six km high at the poles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The<strong> orographic forcing and strong convection <\/strong>leading to the formation of deep <strong>cumulonimbus clouds <\/strong>as high as 15 km are responsible for most of the cloudburst events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cloudbursts in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cloudbursts are infrequent, but climate change is increasing their frequency as a warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The cloudbursts are mostly confined to the<strong> remote Himalayan and Western Ghats regions <\/strong>where there are few weather stations and rain gauges leading to under-reporting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There have been a spurt of cloudburst-like incidents in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu &amp; Kashmir, especially during the July-August monsoon months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that nearly 30 cloudbursts were officially recorded between 1970 and 2016, but experts say the real figure is far higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Do Mountain Regions Experience More Cloudbursts?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cloudbursts are more common in <strong>mountainous region<\/strong>s due to<strong> orographic lift,<\/strong> where warm, moisture-laden air is forced to rise along mountain slopes, cools, and condenses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mountains create <strong>conditions of low pressure<\/strong>, leading to strong build-up of clouds and collisions of air that make rain heavier.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sometimes powerful upward drafts of air hold the rain away, and the raindrops grow larger and larger until they are too heavy to stay aloft.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Then suddenly they fall in a short time, and there is a great cloudburst.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cloudbursts can also take place in plains but conditions are not so favourable as in hilly areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b4c0af\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"853\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-268.png\" alt=\"cloudburst\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-80482\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b4c0af; aspect-ratio:1.2004823366531197;width:424px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-268.png 1024w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-268-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-268-768x640.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Effects of Cloudbursts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cloudbursts are the most intense end of the rainfall spectrum and cause <strong>flash floods\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy rains destabilise mountain slopes causing <strong>landslides<\/strong>, mudflows and rockslides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sediment and debris clog up river channels, increasing the<strong> risk of flooding downstream.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rapid floods do not leave enough time for evacuation, resulting in <strong>loss of life and displacement.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roads, bridges, power lines, communication networks and homes are <strong>badly damaged or washed away<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crops, fertile topsoil and <strong>farmlands are destroyed <\/strong>due to floods and erosion and the livelihood of farmers is affected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges to Forecast Cloudbursts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Localised<\/strong>: Cloudbursts happen in very small areas, smaller than the grid size used in most weather models, so it is hard to get the prediction right.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fast development<\/strong> \u2013 Cloudbursts develop and intensify very quickly, giving very little lead time for forecasting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mountain challenges:<\/strong> Doppler radar signals are blocked by hilly terrain and there are fewer automatic weather stations so data are missing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Computational limits: <\/strong>Accurate forecasting needs high-resolution weather models and vast amounts of computing power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d7d7d8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"631\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-267-1024x631.png\" alt=\"challenges to forecast cloudbursts\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-80481\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d7d7d8;
