{"id":80304,"date":"2026-07-29T17:22:40","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T11:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=80304"},"modified":"2026-07-29T17:27:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T11:57:13","slug":"india-strategic-outlook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/29-07-2026\/india-strategic-outlook","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Strategic Outlook: From Geography To Geometry of Interests\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/International Relations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s growing profile in the Indo-Pacific, G20 and changing geopolitical realities have revived discussions about expanding its strategic vision beyond South Asia to a global and interest-based engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About India\u2019s Strategic Outlook<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s strategic vision was <strong>traditionally geographical<\/strong>, with a focus on territorial security, the Himalayas, the Line of Control (LoC), the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Indian Ocean and immediate neighbourhood.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was in line with the <strong>aims of protecting sovereignty and maintaining regional stability.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But India has emerged as a major economic, technological and maritime force.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It means that national security is<strong> no longer limited to land boundaries<\/strong> but increasingly connected to marine connections, technology, energy security, supply chains, cyberspace and strategic partnerships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thus, India\u2019s strategic thinking is increasingly moving from the <strong>geography of borders to the geometry of interests, <\/strong>where connectivity, technology, maritime influence, supply chains and strategic partnerships matter as much as territorial boundaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Past Experience: Geographic Proximity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s strategic priorities were traditionally determined by its close neighbours because of:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enduring security risks<\/strong> from Pakistan (cross-border terrorism) and China (border disputes and military standoffs).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neighbourhood First Policy:<\/strong> Promoting regional stability and peace in South Asia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Ocean security<\/strong>, Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs) and marine trade protection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus on <strong>continental defence,<\/strong> with emphasis on territorial integrity and border management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The paradigm was effective in dealing with the strategic realities of the twentieth century but is becoming unsuitable for present geopolitical concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Need to Reimagine India\u2019s Strategic Outlook<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rise of the Indo-Pacific: <\/strong>India\u2019s economic and geopolitical interests now span the Indo-Pacific. Maritime trade, naval presence and strategic ties influence the region\u2019s security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy and Supply Chain Security:<\/strong> The Gulf accounts for over 80% of India\u2019s crude oil imports. Critical minerals, semiconductor supply chains and emerging technologies need varied global relationships beyond South Asia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>China\u2019s Growing Strategic Presence:<\/strong> China now has a strategic presence in marine infrastructure (String of Pearls), digital technologies, Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), trade and investments across Asia and Africa.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hence, India\u2019s answer has to be beyond the Himalayan frontier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emerging Non-Traditional Security Threats:<\/strong> Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, space security, climate change, and resilient supply chains have reduced geographical boundaries making events far away directly important to India\u2019s national interests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Civilisational Diplomacy as Strategic Capital:<\/strong> India\u2019s historical linkages through Buddhism, Nalanda, the Indian Ocean trade network and cultural exchanges continue to bolster partnerships across Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf and Africa through soft power and trusted engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bad2cd\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-251-621x1024.png\" alt=\"need to reimagine india\u2019s strategic outlook\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-80305\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bad2cd; Steps by India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has already begun to reorient its foreign policy towards a larger strategic vision through:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Act East Policy<\/strong> for increased involvement with ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neighbourhood First Policy<\/strong> promotes regional connection &amp; stability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region)<\/strong> promotes greater maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI)<\/strong> towards a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Participation in the QUAD <\/strong>(India, USA, Japan, Australia) on marine security, resilient supply chains and emerging technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>I2U2 and India\u2013Middle East\u2013Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC)<\/strong> for enhanced connectivity, trade and strategic integration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>International Solar Alliance (ISA) and Global South efforts<\/strong>, further cementing India as a responsible development partner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capacity building, digital public infrastructure, humanitarian assistance, and infrastructure collaboration to build ties across Africa, the Gulf and Central Asia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward: Strengthening India\u2019s Strategic Perspective<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adopt a whole-of-government strategic strategy<\/strong> that brings together diplomacy, defence, commerce, technology and economic security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strengthen marine capability<\/strong> and naval presence in the Indo-Pacific.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reduce the excessive strategic focus<\/strong> on proximate rivals;
