{"id":80170,"date":"2026-07-27T17:59:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T12:29:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=80170"},"modified":"2026-07-27T18:01:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T12:31:55","slug":"invasive-species-global-south","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/27-07-2026\/invasive-species-global-south","title":{"rendered":"Invasive Species Threaten Global South Biodiversity \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Environment&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A recent study found that the greatest impacts of invasive alien species on biodiversity are in the<strong> Global South<\/strong>, where rapid development, weak governance and limited management capacity make ecosystems <strong>more vulnerable.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Invasive Alien Species<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are plants, animals, pathogens and other organisms that are <strong>non-native to an ecosystem<\/strong> and which may cause economic or environmental harm or adversely affect human health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They compete with, prey on, or transmit diseases to native species, threatening biodiversity.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Do you know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, <strong>amended in 2022<\/strong>, <strong>invasive alien species (IAS) are non-native plants or animals<\/strong> that pose a threat to the biodiversity of India through their introduction or spread. But this definition is too narrow.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It does <strong>not cover the case of native Indian species<\/strong> which become invasive in parts.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The chital or spotted deer, for example, is protected on the mainland but has become ecologically damaging in the Andaman Islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance and Multidimensional Linkages<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ecological:<\/strong> IAS drive native species extinction through predation, competition and habitat alteration. <strong>For ex: Lantana camara <\/strong>has altered forest understorey composition across Indian protected areas including Bandipur and Corbett.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic: <\/strong>Agricultural losses from invasive pests and weeds threaten food security in economies dependent on smallholder farming. Fall armyworm caused significant maize losses across Africa and India after its introduction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Health:<\/strong> Invasive vectors such as Aedes mosquitoes expand the geographic range of dengue and Zika, linking biodiversity governance to public health security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water security: <\/strong>Aquatic invasives like water hyacinth choke water bodies, affecting irrigation, fisheries and hydropower. For ex: Loktak Lake in Manipur faces recurring water hyacinth infestation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic and trade dimension:<\/strong> Global supply chains and shipping ballast water are major transmission vectors, making IAS management a cross-border governance issue rather than a purely domestic one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fragmented institutional responsibility <\/strong>across environment, agriculture, trade and customs ministries weakens coordinated response.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor baseline biodiversity data i<\/strong>n developing countries delays early detection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Financial constraints limit <\/strong>long term eradication and restoration programmes, which are costlier than prevention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Climate change is expanding suitable habitats<\/strong> for invasive species, compounding existing management gaps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited public awareness<\/strong> leads to unintentional spread through horticulture, aquarium trade and ornamental plantation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>India&#8217;s Position and Initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is a signatory to the <strong>Convention on Biological Diversity and its National Biodiversity Action Plan<\/strong> includes IAS management as a thematic priority.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biological Diversity Act, 2002 and National Biodiversity Authority <\/strong>provide the regulatory framework, though implementation remains uneven across states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forest Departments have undertaken targeted removal drives against Lantana camara and Prosopis juliflora in protected areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plant Quarantine Order, 2003<\/strong> under the Ministry of Agriculture regulates import related biosecurity, though enforcement capacity at ports remains limited.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s National Action Plan on Invasive Alien Species (draft stage) <\/strong>seeks a unified national response mechanism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source:<a
