2026 NATO Summit, held in Ankara, T\u00fcrkiye, reaffirmed the Alliance&#8217;s commitment to collective defence and strengthening Europe&#8217;s defence industrial base.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Outcomes of the NATO Ankara Summit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reaffirmation of Collective Defence: <\/strong>The NATO members unanimously reaffirmed their <strong>&#8220;ironclad commitment&#8221; <\/strong>to collective defence under <strong>Article 5<\/strong> of the <strong>Washington Treaty.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The members pledged to strengthen military preparedness against emerging threats, particularly from Russia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Higher Defence Spending: <\/strong>NATO members reaffirmed the Hague Defence Commitment, under which every member agreed to spend at least <strong>5%<\/strong> of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defence by <strong>2035.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Continued Support for Ukraine:<\/strong> NATO declared its \u201cunwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Revitalisation of Europe&#8217;s Defence Industrial Base (DIB): <\/strong>The alliance partners vowed to build a high technology, high capacity, Europewide defence industrial base , the network of firms, factories, laboratories and skilled workers needed to build and sustain a country\u2019s military power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Competition for Defence Equipment: <\/strong>The decision of NATO members to increase defence expenditure will increase global demand for advanced military equipment and countries such as India may face longer delivery timelines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rising Costs Procurement:<\/strong> Higher procurement costs will place additional pressure on India&#8217;s defence budget and affect the pace of military modernisation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supply Chain Disruptions: <\/strong>India continues to depend on foreign suppliers for several critical defence technologies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For instance, delays in the supply of <strong>GE F-404<\/strong> fighter engines have already affected the production schedule of the <strong>Tejas Mk-1A fighter aircraft.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India should leverage its growing manufacturing capabilities to become a reliable exporter of defence equipment to friendly countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The participation of private industry, startups, and MSMEs should be expanded through public-private partnerships, defence innovation programmes, and technology transfer initiatives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India needs to expand investments in emerging technologies such as <strong>artificial Intelligence, robotics,hypersonic technologies<\/strong> and cyber and electronic warfare.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India should promote domestic production of critical defence components such as <strong>semiconductors, sensors, advanced materials and electronic systems.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>About NATO<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance of countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Establishment:<\/strong> It was founded in <strong>1949<\/strong> with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty, more popularly known as the <strong>Washington Treaty.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> To ensure the security and defense of its member countries through collective defense.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Founding Members:<\/strong> The original members of NATO were <strong>Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Collective Defense: <\/strong>The cornerstone of NATO is <strong>Article 5 <\/strong>of the North Atlantic Treaty, which states that an armed attack against one or more of its members is considered an attack against all members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decision-Making:<\/strong> Decisions within NATO are made on the basis of consensus among member countries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The North Atlantic Council<\/strong>, which includes the ambassadors of all member countries, is the principal political decision-making body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Members:<\/strong> It has <strong>32 member countries, Finland and Sweden <\/strong>became the 31st and 32nd members respectively.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On signing the Treaty, countries voluntarily commit themselves to participating in the political consultations and military activities of the
