Eases FDI Rules for E-com Firms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The government <strong>relaxed FDI rules<\/strong> for the<strong> e-commerce sector,<\/strong> allowing <strong>foreign-funded e-commerce entities <\/strong>to operate<strong> inventory-based models exclusively for exports of goods<\/strong> manufactured or produced in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has eased its<strong> foreign direct investment (FDI) rules<\/strong> to <strong>allow foreign-funded e-commerce companies <\/strong>to purchase products <strong>directly from Indian sellers and export them to overseas customers.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Earlier governments maintained a <strong>strict distinction<\/strong> between <strong>foreign-funded marketplace platforms and inventory-based online retailers <\/strong>to protect millions of small retailers and traders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Under the existing rules, <\/strong>foreign-funded e-commerce companies are permitted to operate<strong> only as marketplaces.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Under the marketplace model,<\/strong> online platforms act as <strong>intermediaries. Independent sellers<\/strong> own the products and sell them through the platform, while the e-commerce company earns commissions and other fees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Under an inventory-based model,<\/strong> the platform itself owns the products, manages inventory and sells directly to customers.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The new provision <strong>will allow them to purchase, store and export <\/strong>Indian products directly from their own inventory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The move would facilitate greater exports <\/strong>through easier and increased access to global markets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amazon said the policy change would help <strong>manufacturers, particularly those in smaller towns and cities, reach overseas buyers.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>With the ease in FDI norms for inventory-based models of e-commerce,<\/strong> India is expected to have<strong> more global e-commerce companies<\/strong> as they will have more flexibility in sourcing, warehousing and shipping Indian-made products to overseas markets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Net Foreign Direct Investment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Net FDI <\/strong>is gross FDI<strong>, <\/strong>which is the total money coming in, minus the money being repatriated out by foreign companies doing business in India and the outward FDI by Indian companies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Net FDI <\/strong>= Gross FDI Inflows \u2212 (Repatriation by foreign firms + Outward FDI by Indian firms).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key Components:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gross FDI Inflows:<\/strong> Total new investments made by foreign entities into the country. It includes setting up factories, acquiring local companies, or expanding operations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Repatriation &amp; Disinvestment:<\/strong> Profits or capital that foreign companies send back to their home countries.
