{"id":79402,"date":"2026-07-16T18:09:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T12:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=79402"},"modified":"2026-07-16T18:09:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T12:39:39","slug":"cabinet-approves-semicon-2-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-07-2026\/cabinet-approves-semicon-2-0","title":{"rendered":"Cabinet Approves Semicon 2.0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Economy; Science &amp; Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Union Cabinet has approved the <strong>Semicon 2.0\u00a0 programme<\/strong> with an outlay of Rs.1,27,500 crore for the development of <strong>India\u2019s semiconductor design and manufacturing ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India Semiconductor Mission 1.0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India Semiconductor Mission 1.0<\/strong> is a flagship programme launched in <strong>2021 <\/strong>under the <strong>Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)<\/strong> to develop a comprehensive semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Mission is supported by an incentive framework of <strong>\u20b976,000 crore<\/strong>, offering fiscal support of up to<strong> 50 percent<\/strong> for silicon fabs, compound semiconductor facilities, assembly and testing units, and chip design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As many as <strong>12 semiconductor<\/strong> manufacturing projects have been approved with an investment pipeline of about <strong>\u20b91.64 lakh crore<\/strong> under the mission.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These include <strong>silicon fabrication units, silicon carbide fabs, advanced and memory packaging facilities, and specialised assembly and testing infrastructure.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India Semiconductor Mission 2.0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was announced in the Union Budget <strong>2026\u201327.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISM 2.0 will focus on <strong>producing semiconductor equipment and materials in India, <\/strong>designing full stack Indian semiconductor intellectual property, and fortifying both domestic and global supply chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"75b8d8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"612\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-159.png\" alt=\"india semiconductor mission 2.0\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-79405\" style=\"--dominant-color: #75b8d8; width:507px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-159.png 612w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-159-300x154.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Semicon 2.0 seeks to build the semiconductor ecosystem through <strong>six pillars- Design, Machines and materials, Setting up more fabs, Further strengthening the ATMP-OSAT industry, Research and Development and Talent development.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pillars of Semicon 2.0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First pillar:\u00a0 <\/strong>Expand India&#8217;s semiconductor design capabilities by promoting chip IPs, system designs, and innovation, building on the success of around 105 chip-design startups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Second pillar:<\/strong> Incentivize manufacturing and R&amp;D of semiconductor equipment, materials, chemicals, and gases to create a robust domestic ecosystem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Third pillar:<\/strong> Efforts will be made to attract more manufacturers to come to India and set up fabs to manufacture chips. This will include silicon fabs, compound semiconductor fabs, discrete component fabs, display fabs, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fourth pillar: <\/strong>Encourage advanced Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) and Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) units to strengthen backend manufacturing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fifth pillar: <\/strong>Move beyond 28\u2013110 nm technology nodes by developing advanced process nodes and next-generation semiconductor technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sixth pillar: <\/strong>With 315 universities training students on complex chip design using the latest EDA tools, around 68,000 students have already been trained.
