{"id":79319,"date":"2026-07-15T17:47:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T12:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=79319"},"modified":"2026-07-15T18:05:25","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T12:35:25","slug":"india-tourism-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/15-07-2026\/india-tourism-sector","title":{"rendered":"India\u2019s Tourism Sector: Unlocking A New Milestone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy; Infrastructure;<\/strong> <strong>GS2\/Governance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s tourism and hospitality sector has been making news again with sustained post-pandemic growth, increased investments, <strong>FAITH\u2019s policy recommendations<\/strong> and the government\u2019s focus on making India a global tourism powerhouse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tourism Sector in India: Present Situation and Future Prospects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tourism is one of the largest <strong>service industries<\/strong> in India and a key driver of economic development, employment generation, cultural preservation and regional development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a <strong>classic multiplier sector<\/strong> where each direct job creates many indirect jobs in transport, handicrafts, food processing, retail and local services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has passed the post-pandemic recovery and entered a period of sustained expansion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It contributes <strong>around 7% to the GDP of India<\/strong> and provides more than <strong>9% of the total employment<\/strong> in the country <strong>(direct &amp; indirect)<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is projected to grow to <strong>10% of India\u2019s GDP by 2030<\/strong> and contribute <strong>$523.6 Bn to India\u2019s GDP by 2034.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Domestic tourist<\/strong> visits in India are projected to more than double from 2.5 Bn in 2024 to an estimated <strong>5.2 Bn by 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Almost $18.47 Bn FDI received 30.5 Mn in forex earnings since April 2000 &#8211; Dec 2024 and 25 Mn foreign arrivals expected to be achieved by 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It adds to the generation of valuable foreign exchange earnings as well as enhancing India\u2019s global cultural presence through its soft power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Is Tourism Important to the Economy of India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strong Industry Performance:<\/strong> Hotel occupancy in key markets has maintained very high levels.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Average room rates (ARRs) have exceeded pre-pandemic levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leisure, business travel, <strong>MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions)<\/strong> and religious tourism continue to drive demand.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increasing Investments:<\/strong> Increased participation from institutional investors, public hotel companies, developers and family offices.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Investment is growing but institutional participation is still below that in mature global hospitality markets, suggesting there is room to grow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emerging Tourism Geography:<\/strong> A defining trend is the diffusion of tourism outside of metropolitan cities.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tier-II and Tier-III cities<\/strong> are emerging as important tourism and hospitality destinations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New tourism circuits being developed by regional airports under UDAN scheme, better highways and industrial corridors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hotels are being driven by airport-centric development for business travellers, transit passengers and convention tourism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other Significance of Tourism Industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Important Driver Of Economic Growth: <\/strong>Tourism makes a significant contribution to GDP and fuels a number of sectors such as transport, aviation, retail, handcrafts, food processing and construction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Employment Generation:<\/strong> Tourism is labour intensive. For every direct job created in hotels, travel agencies or transport, many indirect jobs are created in local economies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional and Inclusive Development:<\/strong> Tourism generates income opportunities in rural, tribal, coastal and hilly areas where industrialisation is not much.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Development:<\/strong> Investments in airport, roads, railways, convention centres and digital infrastructure improve connectivity and spur regional development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foreign Exchange Earnings:<\/strong> Inbound tourism generates valuable foreign exchange earnings, which help to strengthen India\u2019s external sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Promotion of India\u2019s Soft Power:<\/strong> Tourism is a reflection of India\u2019s civilisational heritage, yoga, Ayurveda, spirituality, cuisine and cultural diversity and thus contributes to building India\u2019s image abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Related Issues and Concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lack of Industry Status:<\/strong> Tourism is not universally recognised as an industry by states, which prevents access to cheap finance and institutional credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Gaps:<\/strong> Many destinations still suffer from poor last mile connectivity, sanitation, accommodation, digital infrastructure and visitor facilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Policy Fragmentation:<\/strong> The lack of coordination between the ministries and state governments hinders the integrated development of tourism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High Taxation and Compliance Burden:<\/strong> High taxes and complex approval processes reduce India\u2019s competitiveness against global tourism destinations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited Global Branding: <\/strong>India does not have a sustained international tourism promotion campaign like leading tourism economies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visa and Travel Ease:<\/strong> e-Visa facilities have been extended, but further simplification of entry procedures and expansion to more countries could significantly boost inbound tourism.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainability Challenges:<\/strong> Responsible tourism practices to combat over-tourism in popular destinations, environmental degradation and climate change vulnerabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tourism Related Efforts and Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Swadesh Darshan Scheme:<\/strong> Development of integrated theme based tourist circuits with improved infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PRASHAD Scheme: <\/strong>Concentrates on revival of pilgrimage and spiritual tourism places.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dekho Apna Desh Campaign: <\/strong>Promotes domestic tourism by motivating citizens to explore India\u2019s diverse destinations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme): <\/strong>Enhances regional air connectivity and unlocks new destinations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>e-Visa Facility: Facilitates travel of foreign tourists, ease of entry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital Tourism Initiatives:<\/strong> The Ministry of Tourism has enhanced tourism data systems and digital platforms to promote destinations and plan policies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry (NIDHI+):<\/strong> The objective is to empower, digitise and facilitate hospitality and tourism sectors.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a common national registry for different parties like accommodation establishments, travel agents, tour operators, independent restaurants to make doing business easier and to provide government services electronically.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead: Strengthening the Tourism Sector of India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Union Budget 2026-27<\/strong> has taken a comprehensive strategy to strengthen tourism infrastructure, improve skills development and take advantage of digital platforms. They include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Experience tourism and development of destinations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regional and Niche Tourism Promotion;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recommendations for FAITH: <\/strong>The Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism &amp; Hospitality (FAITH) has suggested:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognition of tourism as an industry in all States.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mission-mode development of <strong>50 tourism destinations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Launching a well-funded <strong>Brand Bharat<\/strong> global tourism campaign.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liberalising visa policies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rationalising taxation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Establishing a single-window clearance mechanism for tourism projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India needs to adopt an integrated and long-term strategy to realise the estimated <strong>$3-trillion travel and tourism opportunity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a need to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integrate tourism planning with infrastructure development, urban planning and regional economic corridors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create world-class tourism infrastructure, including last-mile connectivity, digital services and visitor amenities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote greater private sector investment with industry status, easier financing and regulatory reforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote sustainable and community tourism, to reach balanced development of regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop destination management through skills development, safety standards and digital governance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a Brand Bharat campaign to be known globally, showcasing India\u2019s heritage, wellness, eco-tourism and cultural diversity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wider e-visa coverage, seamless multimodal transport and simplified procedures make travel easier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Daily Mains Practice Question<\/strong><br><strong>[Q] <\/strong>Examine the role of India&#8217;s tourism and hospitality sector in achieving inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
