including <strong>social engineering, credential theft, supply-chain compromise and cloud exploitation<\/strong> &#8211; are now established attack methods.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exploiting Digital Trust: <\/strong>Attackers increasingly exploiting \u2018digital trust\u2019 rather than directly targeting passwords or transactions.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cybercriminals are manipulating vulnerabilities across biometric onboarding, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven decision-making, partner applications, real-time payment systems, APIs and third-party ecosystems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Industrialisation of Deepfake Fraud: <\/strong>Deepfake-enabled fraud has become \u201cindustrialized\u201d, with attackers deploying real-time executive video deepfakes, adversarial large language models (LLMs) and polymorphic attack variants to evade detection.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social engineering and Business Email Compromise (BEC) campaigns<\/strong> have also intensified, while <strong>credential theft and session hijacking <\/strong>have emerged as the primary methods for gaining initial access to systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The report identifies AI asymmetry<\/strong> as one of the defining risks facing financial institutions.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Activities that once required specialist teams, significant resources and weeks of effort can increasingly be<strong> performed at machine speed by comparatively low-resource threat actors.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recommendation: <\/strong>The report highlights the n<strong>eed to move beyond periodic security interventions<\/strong> towards continuous risk assessment, coordinated response and stronger information sharing.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cyber Frauds in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>As per National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal Data, <\/strong>around 28 lakh cyber frauds were reported in the year 2025, amounting to 22,931 crore rupees.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased Digital Transactions: <\/strong>Digital transaction volumes have increased 38-fold, while transaction values have more than tripled.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The significant growth of the digital payment ecosystem has been backed by systems such as UPI, IMPS, and NEFT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evolving Nature of Fraud: <\/strong>A typical fraud today may not involve technical compromise of systems, but fraudsters are deploying various tactics, such as bogus call centres, deepfake-driven impersonation scams and mule account networks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The instant nature of digital payments <\/strong>further increases the risk, as the scope for timely intervention and recovery of funds becomes limited.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives by Government of India to Prevent Cybercrimes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In): <\/strong>CERT-In is the <strong>national nodal agency<\/strong> for responding to cybersecurity incidents.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It provides proactive and reactive cybersecurity support and plays a crucial role in ensuring the security and resilience of the country&#8217;s cyber infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC): <\/strong>NCIIPC is responsible for protecting critical information infrastructure from cyber threats.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It identifies and designates critical sectors and advises organizations in these sectors on enhancing their cybersecurity measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyber Crime Prevention against Women &amp; Children (CCPWC) scheme: <\/strong>The Ministry of Home Affairs has provided financial assistance to all the States &amp; UTs under the scheme to support their efforts for setting up of cyber forensic-cum-training laboratories, training, and hiring of junior cyber consultants.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C)<\/strong>: It provides a framework and ecosystem for Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) to deal with cyber crimes in a comprehensive and coordinated manner.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2018Joint Cyber Coordination Teams\u2019 have been constituted for seven regions at Mewat, Jamtara, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Visakhapatnam and Guwahati under the I4C.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal<\/strong>: It is launched to enable the public to report incidents pertaining to all types of cyber crimes.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A toll-free number 1930 <\/strong>has been operationalized to get assistance in lodging online cyber complaints.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System<\/strong> module has also been launched for immediate reporting of financial frauds and to stop siphoning off funds by the fraudsters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cyber Swachhta Kendra (Botnet Cleaning and Malware Analysis Centre): <\/strong>This initiative is aimed at creating awareness about <strong>botnet and malware infections <\/strong>and providing<strong> tools for detection and cleaning<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It also provides cyber security tips and best practices for citizens and organisations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2284051&amp;reg=48&amp;lang=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>PIB<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\n Context<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\">\nThe Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the second edition of the Digital Threat Report 2025\u201326.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/p>\n<p>Major Findings<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<li class=\"ms-5\"\t>\n<p>Emerging Threats: Threats previously considered emerging or episodic &#8211;
