the Malay Peninsula, the Sunda Islands of Indonesia, and Australia to the <strong>east<\/strong>; the Southern Ocean to the <strong>south<\/strong>; and Africa and the Arabian Peninsula to the <strong>west<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"afcfd2\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #afcfd2;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"461\" height=\"373\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-146.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-79268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-146.png 461w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-146-300x243.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 461px) 100vw, 461px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Maritime Security: <\/strong>It involves <strong>protecting the nation&#8217;s sovereignty<\/strong> from threats arising from the oceans and seas.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Threats include protecting coastal areas, safeguarding the available ocean resources such as fish, offshore oil and gas wells, port facilities, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s maritime security is closely linked to <strong>major chokepoints<\/strong> in and around the Indian Ocean, such as the <strong>Strait of Hormuz, Bab-el-Mandeb, Malacca Strait, and Lombok Strait.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India&#8217;s Layered Naval Capability<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Indian Navy is a primary security provider in the Indian Ocean Region.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It safeguards a coastline of about <strong>11,098 kilometres<\/strong>, an Exclusive Economic Zone of nearly 2.4 million square kilometres, and sea lanes carrying close to <strong>90 per cent of India&#8217;s trade by volume.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Achieving this requires a balanced fleet, with each class of warship contributing to a distinct layer of maritime security.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In India, <strong>New-generation indigenous naval platforms<\/strong> have been inducted to bring this layered approach to life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stealth Frigates of the Navy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Designed for <strong>modern naval warfare<\/strong>, they integrate advanced weapons, sensors, and aviation facilities while optimizing radar, infrared (thermal), and acoustic signatures for enhanced stealth.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Project 17A<\/strong> is the Indian Navy\u2019s advanced stealth frigate programme to build seven next-generation guided-missile warships.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Nilgiri-class<\/strong> comprises INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, INS Taragiri, INS Udaygiri, INS Dunagiri, INS Mahendragiri and the under construction Vindhyagiri.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Survey Vessels of the Navy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Survey vessels strengthen the Indian Navy&#8217;s hydrographic capability by <strong>mapping the seabed and coastal waters<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These ships regularly undertake humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and search and rescue missions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Indian Navy is inducting the indigenous <strong>Sandhayak-class survey vessels.<\/strong> The class comprises <strong>INS Sandhayak, INS Nirdeshak, INS Ikshak and INS Sanshodhak.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shallow-Water Sub-Hunters<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft strengthen the Indian Navy&#8217;s coastal defence capability.
