{"id":78962,"date":"2026-07-11T17:55:52","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T12:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=78962"},"modified":"2026-07-11T17:56:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T12:26:14","slug":"centre-defends-e20-rollout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/11-07-2026\/centre-defends-e20-rollout","title":{"rendered":"Centre Defends E20 Rollout"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Syllabus: GS3\/ Energy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry issued clarificatio<strong>n defending the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<strong>Ethanol<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It can be produced from <strong>sugarcane, maize, wheat, etc <\/strong>which are having <strong>high starch content.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In India, ethanol is mainly produced from <strong>sugarcane molasses by fermentation<\/strong><strong>process<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It can be <strong>mixed with gasoline<\/strong> to form different blends.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Application:<\/strong> It is widely used not only as an alternative fuel source but also in various industries as a chemical solvent and in the synthesis of organic compounds.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethanol also has medical applications as an antiseptic and disinfectant, adding to its versatile uses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ethanol Blending<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethanol blending refers to the <strong>practice of mixing ethanol with gasoline <\/strong>to create a fuel mixture that can be used in internal combustion engines.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>There are a few common blends:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>E10: <\/strong>This is a mixture of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline. It is the most common blend and is used widely in many countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E15:<\/strong> This blend contains 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>E85:<\/strong> This is a high-ethanol blend, consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. It&#8217;s used in flex-fuel vehicles designed to run on higher ethanol content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Global Status of Ethanol Blending&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethanol blending is now a globally accepted practice. Several major economies have built ethanol firmly into their fuel strategy.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>United States: <\/strong>E10 is the standard ethanol blended fuel nationwide. E15 is expanding rapidly, backed by the US government.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Millions of vehicles are already flex fuel capable. These can run on blends as high as E85.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brazil<\/strong>: Brazil remains the global leader in ethanol use. It currently mandates E27 as its standard petrol blend. This is being raised further to around 35 percent.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over 80 percent of new cars sold are flex fuel vehicles. These run on E27, E30, or pure hydrous ethanol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Japan<\/strong>: Japan has brought ethanol into its fuel mix too. This was done through a phased E10 rollout.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Benefits of Ethanol Blending&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d0d0cf\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"565\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-113-565x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-78964\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d0d0cf; aspect-ratio:0.5518770595300422;width:364px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-113-565x1024.png 565w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-113-166x300.png 166w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-113-768x1392.png 768w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-113-848x1536.png 848w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-113.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Environmental Benefits:<\/strong> Cleaner combustion results in lower emissions of greenhouse gases and harmful pollutants, including carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and hydrocarbons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy Security &amp; Economic Gains: <\/strong>Curtails crude oil imports, saves foreign exchange, diversifies the energy mix and reduces vulnerability to fluctuations in the international oil prices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Farmer Welfare:<\/strong> Increases the demand of crops and agriculture residues which provides an additional and stable income source to the farmers apart from creating rural employment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improved Engine Performance:<\/strong> The higher octane rating helps in efficiency and avoids knocking ensuring overall better performance of the vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Approach&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme was launched in <strong>2003<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The programme sought to promote the use of alternative and environment friendly fuels and to reduce import dependency for energy requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Objectives<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reduce Import Dependence:<\/strong> India aims to decrease its reliance on imported crude oil, thereby improving energy security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental Benefits:<\/strong> Ethanol is a cleaner-burning fuel compared to gasoline, which helps in reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support for Farmers:<\/strong> The program supports the agricultural sector by providing a market for ethanol, which is often derived from sugarcane, corn, or other crops.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key Components<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Blending Targets:<\/strong> India has set specific targets for ethanol blending. For instance, the National Policy on Biofuels (2018) outlined a target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2025-26.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phased Implementation:<\/strong> The blending targets are being rolled out in phases, gradually moving towards higher blends like E20.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure Development: <\/strong>The government has been investing in the infrastructure necessary for ethanol production, storage, and distribution, including establishing more ethanol production facilities and blending units.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Achievements of EBP<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethanol blending has increased from less than 1.5 percent in 2013-14 to 20 percent in 2025-26.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India achieved the 20 percent blending target five years ahead of schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethanol procurement rose from about 38 crore litres in Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2013-14 to over 1,200 crore litres (projected) in 2025-26.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Production capacity expanded nearly fivefold from 421 crore litres in 2014 to about 2,000 crore litres in 2026.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This expansion has reduced crude oil imports and saved valuable foreign exchange. It has also lowered greenhouse gas emissions and strengthened farmers&#8217; incomes through new market opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges and Concerns&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Infrastructure:<\/strong> Developing the necessary infrastructure for large-scale ethanol production and blending can be complex and costly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Feedstock Availability:<\/strong> Ensuring a steady and adequate supply of raw materials for ethanol production, such as sugarcane, can be challenging, especially in the face of changing agricultural conditions and market fluctuations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consumer Acceptance: <\/strong>Educating consumers and ensuring that vehicles can run efficiently on higher ethanol blends are also important for the program&#8217;s success.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Concerns Regarding Higher Ethanol Blending:\u00a0 <\/strong>Higher ethanol blending raises concerns about vehicle compatibility, as it can damage engines and fuel system components in older vehicles, reduce fuel mileage and cause cold-start issues.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It might also raise maintenance costs for existing vehicle owners.
