{"id":78778,"date":"2026-07-09T18:19:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T12:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=78778"},"modified":"2026-07-09T18:20:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T12:50:29","slug":"india-new-zealand-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/09-07-2026\/india-new-zealand-relations","title":{"rendered":"India\u2013New Zealand Relations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The New Zealand Prime Minister highlighted the need for India and New Zealand to work together to strengthen a rules-based international order amid growing geopolitical uncertainties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Changing Global Geopolitical Landscape<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Zealand described the current global situation as an <strong>\u201cinflection point\u201d, <\/strong>where the world is shifting from a <strong>rules-based system<\/strong> to a power-based system and from a predominantly multilateral framework towards a more multipolar world order.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were many key global challenges were highlighted like;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The increasing strategic influence of China in the <strong>Indo-Pacific region.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The conflict was caused by <strong>Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changing priorities of the <strong>United States in global affairs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to New Zealand, smaller countries have benefited from the <strong>Post-World War II<\/strong> rules-based order because it ensures that international rules apply equally to both small and large nations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He also outlined the <strong>defence, security, and people-to-people ties<\/strong> as the <strong>three pillars<\/strong> of India and New Zealand ties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2013New Zealand Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diplomatic Relations: <\/strong>India and New Zealand established their diplomatic relations in <strong>1952. <\/strong>Both countries are members of the Commonwealth, sharing democratic values and governance principles.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Zealand identified India as a priority country in its <strong>\u2018Opening Doors to India\u2019<\/strong> policy notified in <strong>2011<\/strong>, which was reiterated in <strong>2015.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Cooperation: <\/strong>Currently, New Zealand is <strong>India\u2019s second-largest trading partner in Oceania.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2024, New Zealand\u2019s imports stood at <strong>USD 47 billion<\/strong>, while exports were <strong>USD 42 billion.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Services Trade: <\/strong>India\u2019s services exports to New Zealand grew by <strong>13% in 2024,<\/strong> reaching<strong> USD 634 million<\/strong>. Major sectors include travel, IT, and business services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In 2024-25,<\/strong> the exports from India to New Zealand were higher than imports from New Zealand, maintaining a positive trade balance with the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India and New Zealand signed the India- New Zealand <strong>Free Trade Agreement (IN- NZ FTA).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a9c0ca\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"496\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-80.png\" alt=\"india\u2013new zealand relations\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-78782\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a9c0ca; width:332px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-80.png 496w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-80-251x300.png 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Customs Cooperation: <\/strong>In <strong>2024<\/strong>, New Zealand and India signed a Customs Cooperative Arrangement, aimed at enhancing trade ties and intensifying collaboration against transnational organized crime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diaspora: There are 292,092 persons of Indian ethnicity in NZ.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is the <strong>2nd largest<\/strong> source of international students in NZ. Currently, there are approximately <strong>8,000 Indian<\/strong> students in NZ, pursuing higher education in various disciplines such as IT, hospitality, science, engineering, and architecture.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hindi <\/strong>is the fifth most spoken language in NZ.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Cooperation: <\/strong>Signed in <strong>2025<\/strong>, the <strong>Defence Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding <\/strong>provided a formal institutional framework for bilateral defence engagement.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The inaugural <strong>India\u2013New Zealand Defence Strategic Dialogue<\/strong> was held in New Delhi in<strong> 2025.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges in Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Immigration and FTA Concerns: <\/strong>Recent debates over New Zealand\u2019s immigration policy have created concerns in India, with allegations that <strong>new rules may disproportionately affect Indian migrants.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Differences over labour mobility remain a key challenge in finalising a comprehensive <strong>India\u2013New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dairy Market Access Dispute: <\/strong>Dairy remains the most sensitive issue in trade negotiations. New Zealand <strong>seeks greater access to India\u2019s dairy market<\/strong>, while India protects the interests of millions of small dairy farmers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Khalistan Issue:<\/strong> India has raised concerns over activities of pro-Khalistan groups in New Zealand.
